Why choose Sony?

I think at this day and age, the technology in digital cameras has advanced to such a stage where any camera will give you a decent picture. To choose a system based solely on brand is both ignorant and illogical.

First know your budget and your need. At any given price point, there are always some camera that excel and some that don’t. The questions always boils down to the price/features ratio that you are comfortable with.

Sony being the new comer is rather aggressive when it comes to pricing at this point. Its sensor technology is at the forefront, so much so that N**** is also using them. The new A550 with its amazing high ISO capabilities and a whole host of features is something you shouldn't missed before you make your decision. It should be at a price point where you are comfortable with.

Moving on the upgrade path, Sony has the lowest priced FF with built in Image stabilizer to boast. The Carl Zeiss AF lenses are among the best you can get. These will cover 95% of your photographic usage for day to day, portraits, landscape, still life etc..

Moving farther up the price point level, if you can afford around 10k or more for a bazooka lens, then your consideration will be different. If you are into wildlife and sports, then I will ask you to look elsewhere at this point of time. However, after so many years of taking photos, I’ve neither been in need of such extravagant lenses nor can I justify so financially. But that’s just me.

Good luck in whatever systems you choose and always remember it’s the man behind the camera.

hi guys.. thanks for all the replies...
ya... since my plan is to get a dslr only by year end, I will wait for the A550 prices hehe
oh ya...I remembered seeing somewhere sony lenses are more ex?
how true is it?

there are several school of thoughts. some say get the "best" U can get so U wun regret U have to upgrade in the future...
and some will say otherwise.
for me, I am not that keen to spend that much on a dslr, though the particular model might have great reviews and specs.
as we know, getting a dsrl is only a start hehe will nid to get drybox or dry cabinet, etc
think I will wait for the A550.
but for sure, I will hang around in this forum.
at least it's not as "hostile" as other forums hehe

I think, premium lenses from all camp are expensive. Unless you are looking to get premium lens, otherwise there are affordable lenses to choose from.

Since you are aiming at A550, DT lenses are quite OK. If you like landscape, your kit-lens would do fine. I have seen bro here produce nice sunset pictures using his kit-lens that is better than mine using a CZ lens. :ashamed:

For portrait, a 50mm F1.8 should be fine. You like macro, 30mm Macro F2.8 also good. These lenses would not cost as much, from what read, they are affordable and result quite good.

You can also look out for classic Minolta A-mount lenses. They would usually be much cheaper than the counterpart of Sony's offering. The only thing you may need to concern is support of these lenses. However, I have a few old Minolta lenses, and from my experience, these lenses were built to last a long long time. If you use them with care, they won't fail you.

Just my thought...

why Sony ?

- my answer is simple, they bought over KM some years back and that is why i am using Sony now.

and u may asked why continue with Sony ?

- i must say Sony has done a very good job in improving technology and products from KM stage.

why not other brands ?

- actually almost all brands are the same, just a slight difference over product range and support level. Currently, Sony support is very good and i personally benefited from it as a consumer.

Sony's entry level has nothing but built-in motor that allows Minolta legendary lenses to be used.. what it attracts me is SteadyShot Inside which save me so much as I do not have to spend on VR, VC, IS lenses..

It's kit lens DSLR starts from S$699.. it's almost same price as compact Lumix LX3.. O,O

my inspiration, my journey...
i first got my a200 w/o knowing much abt dslrs and the reputation from other brands. and i have not regretted since.

one reason is because it has got the most user-friendly menu option ive seen, compared to other brands. and by chance i came across this forum and was immediately welcomed with warmth that u will not find anywhere else. i have tried browsing thru other forums of other camps and also the main KlubSnap but i have not found any to be as receptive as this home.

i have also tried other brands of camps just so i have a rough gauge of where i stand and although i do note that sony might be lacking in some areas, they have drastically improved their quality, especially in the sensor. this can be seen from the a550 reviews at ISO12800 and how its images are still cleaner or comparable to that of a7xx or a9xx.

i think the bros here have said enough, more importantly what i feel is that it doesnt matter what brand or system u get. if one is passionate enough, which i think you are as i can see u have read up quite a bit b4 posting ur topic, keep posting questions and read up on the internet and ud be amazed that different sites will give u different advices on how to achieve a desired picture.

with that i wish u all the best in ur photography and may u stay here no matter what camp u end up with. cheers!
