This lens is not ssm, so will ne "noisy". As to extend of noisiness... difficult to advise unless you have similar lens to test and hear out... However, if you understand the mechanism of the lens focusing, it is driven by the motor through the small rotating pin at bottom left of your cam... And the only reason it can be "more" noisier than normal, could be due to friction. Maybe you can turn on MF and do manual focus on the lens. Is it smooth? Or can you detect some kind of friction? But this is only a simple test, after this you may want to check with another user of same lens, if the "smoothness" of focusing the same? |

thanks for the input, birder. MF is not as noisy. it's quite smooth MF focusing. just that the AF is a bit noisy does anyone have any idea how much is it to send for check at SSC? |

The first time I got this lens, I was surprised too. When it focus, I could actually feel the vibration. Sent it to Sony and they told me the lens was OK. They did some lubricating and was FOC at that time. Later on, I chanced upon a brand new set, and it is as noisy as the older one straight out of the box. So, I guess it is the inherit design problem. |

It will not be noisy with MF. But If you sense any kind of friction, that's probably a reason to be of concern, and to send for service. If it is smooth, then no issue. I am not sure if you remember ... I took some photos during the "SDW Workshop - Giora Dan and Paul Daly" earlier this year, I was using the 28-70G, and by golly it's AF is so loud.. I think I got everyone's attention then, before I switched to MF. Nothing wrong with the lens.. it's normal. |

@clem and @KF, thanks for the input , perhaps it's a design issue.. @clem, after lubrication by SSC, does the lens make lens noise? @birder ah.. i remember that incident at Wisma. yah.. it does sound something like that. |

I've used the km 85 1.4G and also the 28-70G (which I own) - and like what bro birder says, the sound the gearing makes during AF is actually pretty loud, but is silent when I switch to MF. I hope this reaffirms that this is more of a design issue.
