Hi all, got a few questions that i would need some help on ..
supposed i use a 2x teleconverter on a 50mm f2.8 macro lens ..
technically, would i be looking at a lens with specifications of 100mm f4 macro since the minimum focusing distance would not change ?
other than the difference in depth of field cause of the difference in aperture, is there any other short comings of such a setup ?

Technically yes, you will get a 100mm f5.6 lens with the 2x TC on 50mm f2.8.

Image quality wise, usually there will be degradation with 2x TC. 1.4x TC has lesser image degradation. One way to get higher magnification with less image quality loss is to use a tube. With the tube it allows closer focusing distance hence the higher magnification. As it does not contain any lens element, there is lesser/no image quality loss.

I do not know how to put it , but using a 2x TC on 50mm is not that good to produce sharp results . I had tried it with my 100mm with 2x & 1.4x ... And i am not very happy with it .

Using Extension Tubes would be a better choice if you wanted to try it out . Otherwise , just use 50mm alone of add filters .

There exists some 2x 'macro' teleconverters that turn any lenses into macro lens at 2x. However so far I have not seen one in AF A-mount.

And have not tested any to give comment on the quality.

Stevewhy, posted an article in clubsnap about this. Need to search for it.
