Read about AF illuminator in the sticky.. My A330 AFi like someone said, sounds like "electricuting" the subject, but.. it sounds cool at the same time. hahah.. But, in Sony point & shoot camera, it uses a beam of red light to help focus. A330 AF is short burst of flash. The other day I try to use fast shutter speed at night , as I want the flash to light up only the subject and not the background, so that it stands out in the dark. But without constant light, such as the red beam in p&s... I can't really see where my subject is... the LCD screen is almost complete darkness.. haha... using viewfinder still can see a bit.. but difficult loh. Do you guys shoot in such dark situation?? yeah i still do. you can try manual focusing instead. other than that... an external flash unit would also provide the 'red beam' assistance which is more accurate (correct this info if i'm wrong) |

The Autofocus Mechanism and sensors in a camera works by finding and differentiating Contrast. i.e. boundaries between objects, hair line against the face, eyes, lips (that has contrast between lips and the rest of the face), the edge of a sleeve against the arm... etc. If you point your focusing point at a place that doesn't have contrast, like the middle of a completely black shirt, or even at a patch of flawless skin. The camera would usually fail to focus (unless it's A700/850/900 - which has a much more sensitive middle focusing sensor) When places get too dark, the camera cannot differentiate contrasts on a subject, thus it needs a little bit of assistance in the form of AF illumination. Bro Kaopei has said it well, the red AF assisting lamp of your accessory flash gives the same effect, but it's much more accurate - because it is a red, Patterned illuminator that projects a red pattern onto a surface - in this case, it becomes possible to focus on white walls (that has no contrast) in the dark. while the red lamp of standard cybershots don't do that... ![]() I've shot with the a100 in very poor lighted night conditions, and as an older model, it has even slower AF, and it works, and that one was a paid wedding... It's possible to use it in the dark, just need to get used to it.

yup I would still shoot in the dark, though like what ChaoxAngel has said, it is tougher to autofocus the subjects which doesn't have a differentiating contrast.. =) |
