switch off SSS when not required
Not advisable, cause most likely it will end up in off position after that and you be missing one of the greatest feature on the alpha cam.

My experience with Sony Cameras with Big LCDs is that - they are big, bright, but also they are rather power consuming...

Actually one of the things you can do to conserve your battery life span is to press the DISP button a couple of times and turn off your display - even though the LCD displays vital information of your settings and etc, you can see the most important settings within your Optical Viewfinder. With the LCD display off - you can save a lot of power.

Also - within the setup menu, set your camera to go into power saving / standby mode as soon as possible.

Switch off Eye start AF - the entry level models from Sony don't have grip sensors linked and coupled to your Eye Start AF - unlike the sony A700, eyestart can begin to AF indiscriminately whenever something is held against the eye start sensors situated near the OVF. This uses electricity - so some people can opt to turn that off.
