Long holiday....

I always see my colleagues from Europe likes to take long summer holiday that typically stretch between 1-2 months from June - August. Likewise, usually, none of my Asian colleague would take leave more than 2 weeks.....

I spoke with my HR colleague from Japan, she can't stand taking off from work more than a couple days. Most colleagues took few days off but spread over the year, which is common practice.

Is this common that most Asian will not take long leave? (> 2 weeks)
Why can't we take long leave...?

Just out of curiosity...

Possibilities:
Too important to take long leave,
Too much work to take long leave,
Fear of boss/sacking to take long leave

Difference:
Westerners know how to enjoy life and they know what retirement is. Asians work themselves to death (exaggeration).

my inspiration, my journey...
depends on working environments, in asia where economy is picking up everywhere, i suppose the only way to build a strong economy is by puttin in more man hours into labour. coupled with the limited number of leave we each have per year, i doubt theres anything that we can do..

also, the trend of bringing forward unused leave is slowly going out of practice..
if you think you're good, remember, the best are still learning...

One thing that I learnt being with the company so long is that works always be there. Work will never stop as new tasks will come after the old one done. It is up to the point of each individual to make sure work-leave will happens.

As you can see, I have started posting my backlog photos. I am on officially one-month long holiday. The first time ever but I think I'll do it again next year.

Company will survive... :-)

There's a saying " you work to live and not live to work" which I can vow is absolutely correct.

I work in Australia for almost 10 years before moving to Singapore....the mentality there is totally different to the one over here.

Everyone in the office in Australia would take a 3-4 weeks holiday regardless if he/she was the boss or admin support.

In my Singapore office here, I hardly see anyone taking more than 2 weeks off. It maybe that Singaporean get less annual leave 14 days as compared to 20 days you are entitled to in Western countries.

Hahahaha!!! Long Holiday!!! How I wish.
I've been working for almost 15 years but then I've no chance of enjoying such a long holiday( more than a month). The longest leave I took normaly 1 week and have to hassle so many interrogation( like commited some serious offence, le ). My admin always asked me to clear my annual leave when come to year end but my boss said you can take your leave and don't come back.

Haha...no one is indispensable in a company, even the boss! If u have to leave for 1 mth holiday just go ahead!
Tell HR, time for crisis management! Life goes on, business continue to run. Just take what you deserve.

And Switch off ya phone while enjoying ya holiday!

Interesting topic..
I think as long as someone can backup your current role.. you can take long leave..
