It depends on your shooting style. What range do you use most? Do you need a constant f2.8 lens?

3) 16-80mm is good enough for all general purpose photography, travell and etc.
Wide enough for landscape and long enough for nice portraits
In Full frame world, it is a 24mm to 120mm.
Though the construction of the lens have to get use to.
But a Carl Zeiss is a Carl Zeiss or "Dog Shit"( "Guo Sie" in Hokkian ) lens. Nothing beats it.
Wonderful colour and sharpness in good light and especially low light.
It is okay to be slow, as long you never stop.

Irritating you with my awesome blinking avatar!

not to mention that 16-80 is much lighter and cheaper than its f2.8 brothers.

It's hard to go wrong with a 16-80. If you are hankering after the F2.8, I think the Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 will give you what you want for the best value for money. It will have about the same 35mm focal length compared to a 24-70mm on a FF.

Some questions for YOU to answer to make decision:

1) You going FF later? If going FF, only 24-70 & 16-35. If not, 16-80 is the way to go, unless you plan to sell & buy when you upgrade.

2) You need the 16mm? or have alternatives in your present lens arsenal? If you like something like landscape, fireworks etc you 'may' need wide 16mm.

3) You need F2.8? For lowlight, bokeh? if not 16-80 is good enough.

4)Budget? - obvious reason

5) Weight & size? do you mind the weight of 24-70 or 16-35? They are heavy and big!

Personally I think 16-80 is a good choice for day to day use..

1) going to full frame??....i havent think of it yet...

2) currently i have 10-20mm using it for landscape

3) 2.8...i am very curious to see the 2.8 bokeh...

4) Budget...not an issue now

5) weight...& size...maybe

i am more concern that .....is it without FF camera it cannot bring out the quality of the 24-70mm or 16-35mm lens??

3) hmm i think if u really like bokeh, go get a prime instead. Get a 50mm F1.4 or a 85mm F1.4 or even a 135mm F1.8 if budget is not a concern..

I have been using the 16-80 for a year and so far I have no regrets. The images that have come out from it has been excellent. The bokeh is pretty sweet too with no visible geometric distortions.
