My own opinion on this lens :

Pros
- Light
- Cheap alternative to reach 500mm
- Reasonably sharp overall
- Unique donut bokeh if used to your advantage

Cons
- Fix aperture at f8
- Need good light for reasonable high shutter speed if using hand-held
- Can be hard to hold it steady. Light weight doesn't help in this case. Tripod is recommended, unless shooting at very high shutter speed.
- Donut bokeh can be ugly too.

unless using in broad day light or with lots of lighting, you would have to bump up the ISO pretty much alot..

and colors... not really great out of camera JPEG. using this lens, would advise to shoot in RAW.

Agree with TANKM's feedback. :thumbsup1:

I have it's predecessor......Minolta Reflex 500F8 and have no real complaints as I purchased
it after much surfing the pros & cons. The donut bokeh does not happen all the time.

I have two birding kakis using Sal500F8 & their feedback is also positive. It's the poor man's birding lens.
Go for it if you do not have deep pockets but still likes to do birding. :cheer: :cheer:

Bought this 2nd hand, and am really happy with it. Takes a little while to use and get used to, and I actually prefer this on MF, but it works great!
For the price, definitely something to keep handy.
