Should I still send my camera in for servicing?

Irritating you with my awesome blinking avatar!

Hi everyone,

Recently just sent my camera in to SSC for servicing, had some issues with the focusing of my lens and requested them to service it.

I got the whole camera + lens back from SSC last week but I detected front focusing issues with the lens so I had it sent back for correction.
While in the process of the 2nd service, I suddenly decided to have my focusing screen changed to the M/L type (for some amount of money) and I just got back the camera today. The AF with the lens now works fine and is very accurate. But one more thing to test, the new focusing screen.

As I wasn't really able to test the focusing screen properly at SSC, I left SSC (after paying everything) and only managed to try it out with my manual focus 85mm F1.4 when I got outdoors.

After a series of test shots, I confirm that there is a bit of front focusing which would be due to the positioning of the focusing screen. I quickly gave a direct call to the technician, though he didn't seem to understand the problem and how to fix it, he suggested that I send it in again together with the lens that I was using. He also mentioned that it would be free.

However, after I got home, I got impatient and tried to fix the problem myself. I swapped the position of the screen spacer with the screen and now it is better. Where it was a clear front focus previously, now it is about exact to a mild backfocus. If I were to give numbers, previously would be about a 10% front focus and now about 2-3% backfocus. (do note that the numbers are somewhat arbitrary and only meant to illustrate the approximate/estimated magnitude of error)

I'm somewhat happy with it now but I'm wondering if I should still send it back to SSC to fix again.

Sigh.

Any advice?

Hi,

If you are using models that have AF Adjustment, then you should try using it to correct front/back focus issues.

I once encounter a AF issue with ONE of my lens only, and had to send in BOTH my body and lens for the technician to calibrate.

So,you should do it too. Inform the counter to inform the technician to calibrate the lens to your body.

CHeers!

erm, sorry but perhaps I didnt mention it clearly.. it wasnt an AF issue. If it was, it would be easy. I've tuned the AF sensor myself before.

But this was a focusing screen issue, i.e. the thing you are looking at through the viewfinder.. if its off, everything is off.

But anyway, I've just sent it in yesterday. Wondering how they would fix it..

Do you mean that your pictures are in focus but what you see in the viewfinder isn't?

Yep, or rather its the converse, i.e. when I see something is in focus, it actually isn't.

Its a major problem when I'm using manual lenses..

adjust your diopter
doesnt work. diopter focuses/defocuses the entire viewfinder.. and doesnt seem to be able to get the right focus even if I tried to defocus the entire thing.

The focusing screen has to be placed on the right side, if placed on the wrong side you will observe what you had experienced now. I had accidentally pop up my focusing screen while changing it to M screen on my A850, so putting the new one in on the wrong side up, made my focusing querky...

Anyway, since you had sent it in, it should be fixed. =) cheers.
