Had the chance to use the A77 during Alpha 4. I've selected two shots based on similar framing and maximum sharpness. The first is from the the A77 and the second from the A900. Both photos are taken with the same Minolta f1.4 lens and both at f2.4(appears f2.5 on the A77 though) and straight from cameras without sharpening and adjustment. However, the A77 was shot in JPEG and the A900 in RAW. First, the original. A77 ![]() A900 ![]() Now the comparison crop at 100%. A77 ![]() A900 ![]() The 24MP on the A77 is indeed doing quite a good job but the A900 still reign supreme in sharpness and details right now. Another things to note is that the purple fringing of the Minolta 85mm is "amplified" along with the 1.5x crop factor and is more pronounced on the A77... |

The A900 do give better bokeh due to the narrow depth of view of 1x censor, no 1.5x censor can replace that. But is the A900 photo converted from RAW? As RAW converted photo tend to give more detail than straight JPG output. |

Yes, FF also has the advantage(or disadvantage depending from which angle you coming from) of narrower DOF. Your second statement though is not quite correct. The RAW file does contain more color depth and dynamic range information, but generally, a JPEG will come out sharper as the camera conversion algorithm usually apply a fair bit of sharpening. A simple explanation can be found here: http://photo.net/learn/raw/ And finally, long time no see.

Yeah, my sentiments exactly. I really like the handling of the A77 but the image quality offers no advantage over the A900. The APS-C dose have its advantages when it comes to the mid and tele end but suffers at wide to ultra-wide. The field of view is certainly different from FF and so is the depth of field which affects the bokeh. Well, rumor has it that we're going to see a new FF soon. In the mean while, I might as well pick up a Nex 7...
