The term big cat— which is not a biological classification — is used informally to distinguish the larger felid species from smaller ones. One definition of "big cat" includes the four members of the genus Panthera: the tiger, lion, jaguar, and leopard. Members of this genus are the only cats able to roar. A more expansive definition of "big cat" also includes the cougar, cheetah, snow leopard, and clouded leopard. I'd say my favourite is either the snow leopard or the clouded leopard. Tigers are nice too. It's sad that big cats are becoming more and more rare .

I know... but at least there are so many in captivity, though. |

Yep. That is some good news. Lions must be the most common big cats now... |

Big cats sure are neat...and boast quite a powerful appearance as well. I'd have to say that I'm fond of leopards (and the black panthers XD) and cheetahs. XD |

Actually, cheetahs are "small cats" despite their size. |

Whoops, that was a silly mistake of me. xD I'll make note of that. I also forgot to mention tigers. They're really majestic...though it's a shame that their numbers are declining.

Tigers are so beautiful. I love them. I wish they weren't so rare in the wild. |

They are, and I wish that too. They're so recognizable; yet, their populations in the wild are just so low these days. I wish that their populations can recover though. It's tough considering how they're losing so much land for their natural habitats in the recent century; however, I still hope they can recover. With only thousands left in the wild, we all need to help ensure that these cats continue to exist in the wild for the future. White tigers sure are beautiful. I've seen some as a child in a safari area; however, wish I could see some more again. XD

White tigers are indeed beautiful. I love them. However, they're inbred, sadly. I think it's because there was only one white tiger left in the wild and all of them descend from that one tiger. |

Aww, that's a shame. I didn't know that though I guess it's nice that we at least have a small amount of white tigers to see in the present day. Tigers are beautiful creatures, hope we can save their populations in the wild. They're excellent hunters too. With such fur to assist them in blending in their surroundings, they're definitely well adapted. Now if only habitat loss and poaching (which results in a downside of a tiger's fur) could be stopped. Additionally, I have a near life size tiger "plush" model at home. I guess having that for so long had resulted in my love for tigers too. |

Lions are becoming rare too... In 50 years, they've been reduced from 450,000 to 20,000. So sad...

It's saddening; yet, so true. Their populations are just falling as well despite being some of the most well known animals as well. It makes me wonder of their numbers in the next 50 years - will they continue to drop at alarming rates or perhaps slow down? I really hope for the latter, but we'll have to see. Their natural habitats are in danger thanks to humans and hunters...that's another issue on its own.Certain species of leopards are also endangered too...it's sad really. So many wild big cat populations are really suffering in the modern day. |

I think you mean subspecies... Yeah. The Amur Leopard is a Critically Endangered (CR) subspecies of the Leopard. There's less than 50 left. |

Yeah, that's what I meant. *facepalm*. Subspecies. XD Dang, that's such a scary amount left. Sure, there are some left in captivity - but it doesn't beat the real Amur Leopards left in the wild. Though sadly, habitat destruction is really taking a toll on these big cats.

Oh yes... I definitely don't think they could survive. I think zoos are their only chance.
