Here's a topic to discuss about mushrooms, toadstools, truffles, and other associated fungal matter. XD I've always thought mushrooms were strange; yet, fascinating. Not too fond of eating the edible ones, but they're still really neat to learn about. Some mushrooms are pretty interesting in appearance as well.

Quite odd lifeforms at the same time. XD Feel free to post pics of mushrooms you thought were interesting or even discuss about them here.

Here's a cool pic about mushroom anatomy:

Quite informative, actually. I didn't realize there were so many different types!

Wow...I have to agree there. I love the varieties of mushrooms, but the actual cap structures and gills..I really didn't know about a lot of that. Neat share Michelle. XD

The gills of certain mushrooms feel quite odd when touched. XD

Haha thanks XD

The gills almost feel like skin... pretty interesting.

You're welcome. XD

Also yeah, it's coming back to me now. XD Those gills did feel somewhat like skin. Very odd to feel, but then again - the anatomy of a mushroom alone is already strange enough (which makes them more unique and fascinating in a sense).

I remember touching the bottom of a mushroom cap..and it slightly reminded me of hair/fur for some reason. Seemed to resemble gills of sorts or perhaps teeth instead. This was a while ago though. XD Strange.

Yeah XD Mushrooms are strange. Most of the fungus is underground, but the part you see above ground is the fruiting body.

I must confess, I had no idea that most of it was underground.

I'm quite surprised myself. :o Really complex growth underground...and that picture you have, that is just wow. :0

Mushroom picking is interesting, but I rather just observe mushrooms from afar. Some really look beautiful in nature despite their leeching traits off decaying material.

Yeah, they can have huge colonies underground (can be one of the largest organisms). Fairy rings are really neat.

And I agree about not picking mushrooms. Some are highly poisonous.

Wow..no kidding. Just massive sizes...

Also true about that aspect of mushroom picking. One has to have a ton of experience to make sure the mushrooms he or she picks isn't harmful. The last thing one wants to do is pick up a poisonous mushroom. DX Many have been fooled for thinking that a mushroom is edible as it's difficult to know right on the spot if a mushroom is safe or poisonous. Maybe it's better to stick with eating mushrooms provided by stores and leave other mushrooms to nature (still nice to look at). :P

Yeah.... I have books warning not to pick mushrooms. It's a shame that some are poisonous, really. I think mushrooms are quite yummy. :P

I've eaten mushrooms in the past, and sure some are interesting. XD I guess I could grow to love the edible ones more if I tried them more often. :P

True, bummer about the poisonous mushrooms. Though some of them can be quite pretty to look at.

Spoiler: click to toggle

Dang that pic is bigger than I expected. XD

Ah dang, didn't realize that at first. XD

Though yeah, some mushrooms are really cool looking. I'd love to pick some up and just collect them. Maybe it's not the best idea to keep them indoors, but still. XD Seeing the edible mushrooms at grocery stores are pretty neat though.

Wow, that fungus is beautiful! The different layers of colours just surrounding it really does make for a pretty sight.

Here's another XD :

Kinda looks like a treat with jelly coming out of it. XD Though this is a young Hydnellum peckii fungus, and it's inedible.

LOL. Just LOL.
Thats strangest living jelly in my life.
Is it eatable? Maybe you can put them on bread and eat it as jelly instead of normal breakfast :P

XD I've seen that before. And TD, EM says it's inedible, which means you can't eat it. :P Shame though, looks like it would taste like jelly XD

Yep, Michelle's right. XD Try that jelly and I bet you'd get sick real soon. XD Though I agree, it looks tempting. The "jelly" really does come out in such a nice colour and does look tempting.

I bet people have tried it before. :P Mm..jelly shrooms. XD

Well they're not mentioned to be poisonous from what I've read; however, they're mentioned to be inedible because they're so bitter tasting.

Yeah, they aren't composed of the regular sweet tasting jelly. XD Yeah, these shrooms ain't part of a healthy breakfast. :P

That's very true.

It does look tempting and with the jelly like look, it certainly does look edible. XD Then again, mushrooms and other fungi are already mysterious as they are. The shapes they form into be, and the areas in which they grow. So odd; yet, cool. XD

My favourite has to be bird's nest fungi. I found one once, in a flowerpot. I knew exactly what it was.

Wow, I can see why the bird's nest fungi was named as so. XD Just like a nest with little eggs in them - it would be an excellent fungi to love. :P

It sounds cute. XD

I really want to go mushroom picking someday. Yes, it could be dangerous, but it sounds fun too. :P Mushrooms are such strange things. XD I love how spongy some of them feel. Though just seeing the mushrooms in the wild and leaving them alone is quite nice too. XD
