It's Cyanobacteria, one of the largest groups of bacteria and they are known for obtaining energy through photosynthesis. Here's some more facts about them : 1. They are gram negative in a gram stain 2. They are phototrophs (light energy and CO2) 3. They are unicellular 4. They are either coccoid or discs. When they are cocci they can be found in tetrads, chains, or sheets 5. They reproduce by binary fission 6. They use chlorophyll a (just like plants and algae) 7. They are prokaryotes 8. It is believed they transformed the anaerobic atmosphere of the early Earth into our oxygen-containing one. 9. They can reduce N2 (gas) into NH4-- nitrogen fixation Pretty ancient group of bacteria indeed. XD |

These are neat living things. I wish I could see them through a microscope. They sound fascinating. |

Same here, I bet their compositions are fascinating. ![]() Pretty neat in looks and they also have aquatic properties. Here's a neat fact: "They (Cyanobacteria) have the distinction of being the oldest known fossils, more than 3.5 billion years old, in fact!" |

Oh yes, I believe I heard about their fossils being billions of years old. I can't imagine how old they are. Remarkable. |

Must agree there. It's incredible as to how long they've been around for. Just ancient bits of past right amongst us to this very day. Very fascinating indeed! |

Wow..that is an amazing find! :o Slime coat sounds pretty interesting. XD I like how their anatomy does resemble a plant cell of sorts. Very neat diagram indeed. XD

They're pretty neat. Blue Smarties use a dye derived from a type of cyanobacterium. |

Well, they are one-celled living things. And that's a neat fact. Spirulina are cyanobacteria too. |
