Red blood cells are neat little cells within our bodies that function primarily to carrying oxygen throughout our bodies. There's millions of tiny little red blood cells that constantly move throughout our bodies each and every day.![]() Red blood cells are made inside your bones, in the bone marrow. They typically live for about 120 days, and then they die. Let's further discuss these awesome cells here. XD Edited by Captain Toad, May 29 2013, 04:57 AM.

I wish I had a microscope powerful enough to see these. They're fascinating. I wish I had a microscope powerful enough to see these. They're fascinating. Edited by ObsessedwithBirds, May 29 2013, 09:12 PM.

Same here, I'd love to see some under the microscope. The rounded shapes of healthy red blood cells just bouncing against each other - it sounds both amusing and fascinating to watch. Makes blood as a whole even more interesting. XD |

That does sound funny. Also note that they're somewhat concave too. Like donuts without holes.

Spot on!

Brings back memories of trying to create a similar structure to haemoglobin (using pipecleaners!!) for a Biology project. |

They do look like donuts. XD It's fun to visualize them in such a sense. They kinda remind me of those red lifesaver candies too. Why must RBCs remind me of food? XD

I know right? XD Red blood cells really do have funny shapes. Kinda makes blood less scarier when one thinks that its composed of tiny little "doughnuts". Red blood cells also vary in shape based off their conditions, so they're certainly interesting little things.

This is a scanning electron microscope image from normal circulating human blood. One can see red blood cells, several white blood cells including lymphocytes, a monocyte, a neutrophil, and many small disc-shaped platelets. Red cells are nonnucleated and contain hemoglobin, an important protein which contains iron and allows the cell to carry oxygen to other parts of the body. They also carry carbon dioxide away from peripheral tissue to the lungs where it can be exhaled. The infection-fighting white blood cells are classified in two main groups: granular and agranular. All blood cells are formed in the bone marrow. There are two types of agranulocytes: lymphocytes, which fight disease by producing antibodies and thus destroying foreign material, and monocytes. Platelets are tiny cells formed in bone marrow and are necessary for blood clotting. Type: Black & White Print. |

Dang, that image is incredible! o.o Just look at all the cells and material within! It's hard to believe that all of that could be found within even a tiny drop of blood. Always liked the looks of these tiny cells. XD Interesting point about how the origination of all blood cells. The bone marrow sure is key to this. |
