The Proterozoic Eon covers an unimaginable stretch of time from 2.5 billion to 542 million years ago. The activity of photosynthetic microbes, begun in the Archean, transformed Earth into a planet with an oxygenated atmosphere and oceans. The scene was set for the subsequent evolution of life in the seas, on land, and in the air. Bacteria and archaea were joined by the first simple animals and plants. Life in the Proterozoic Microbes During the Proterozoic, evolution was almost wholly concerned with making large improvements to the cell. Such changes included the development of a nucleus, oxygenic photosynthesis, and the ability to reproduce sexually. The resulting specialized cells became the ancestors of fungi, plants and animals. The Proterozoic era is definitely a special one in regards to the development of the earliest forms of complex life such as animals. Additionally, the build up of oxygen on Earth at this time is fascinating. None of us would be here now if Earth never got a sufficient amount of oxygen in its atmosphere, and fortunately this era brought enough of it for the earliest animals and plants to make a living in and eventually develop. Amazing! |

It's an interesting time period. Would be cool to go back in time and see it! |
