Reading Frankenstein now, through no fault of my own.

Shelly or Koontz? :P

So, I finally read The Call of Cthulhu yesterday, and I have to admit I was very disappointed with it. However, I am in a dreadful mood right now so maybe at a calmer moment I'll reflect more favourably on it. I have a compendium called Tales out from the library so I'll read some of the others, and see whether it's Lovecraft in general or just that one that I don't like.

Ahhhhh. It seems I'm not the only one going old school. Gruen's reading Lovecraft, and I'm right now reading some Robert E. Howard.

Shelley. The one filled with a lot of useless and bloated language.

If Koontz messes around and doesn't finish that trilogy, I'll :auss:

For the first time in his life, he writes something nearly decent (I'm thinking having a co-author has much to do with that) and blows it off, even announcing he'd forego the co-author in the final book.

Whippersnapper. In my day (not quite the 19th-century) we appreciated the depth and luxuriousness of descriptive writing.

While it's surely his most famous, I (and many others) don't consider it his best. Colour Out of Space and Shadow Out of Time are both considered to be much better.

I also like Memory, Nyarlathotep, The Thing on the Doorstep, and... um... oh, Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family. If your collection doesn't have Memory, it's right over here. I wouldn't read the longer works on that site (white-on-black... ugh), but Memory is only about 350 words.

Thanks for the link; Memory isn't in there, so I'll take a look tomorrow.

Not surprising. I have a ton of Lovecraft collections, and I think only one has Memory in it.

Ok, Memory didn't really do it for me either. Having read some of the other short stories, I do understand to some extent, or think I do, the style he writes in, but it just something that particularly suits me. I'm not, though, saying it's "bad"; just not my thing. I'm very aware it might be a mood thing, though: I liked one I read last night called Shadow Out Of Time, and was probably in a more receptive mood to be taken along by the prose. I will give it another shot in due course.

Meanwhile, I've picked up Underworld by Don De Lillo and have been unable to put it down since.

Did you do grad work on solar energy? Did you do a paper on the trigger principle of nuclear fusion? Do you go the dentist every six months for a prophy and a polish? Are you a physicist with a grudge against your mother? Are you a systems engineer who masturbates in secret while your wife is watching reruns of "The Honeymooners"? Do you wish to hell you could watch a tower shot with all the special effects, with the sun coming up ass-backwards and the trees casting shadows in the wrong direction, the spectacle of the unmattered atom, the condensation cloud arranged split-secondly on the shock disc, sort of primly place-centered, and the visible shock approaching, and the biblical wind that carries sagebrush, sand, hats, cats, car parts, condoms and poisonous snakes, all blowing by in the desertt dawn?

Fair enough; he's not for everyone. I'm just such a ridiculous fanboy, I sometimes forget that, heh.

Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 by Hunter S. Thompson. I cannot emphasise enough how brilliantly funny and interesting this is, and right now with the election stuff I would really recommend it.

Europe and the People Without History by Eric Wolf. Very interesting mix of history and anthropology.

MEDICAL AND BURN UNIT ALERT

Whoosh Boom Splat: The Garage Warrior's Building Guide to Projectile Shooters, By William Gurstelle

I forsee a hospital stay this summer, perhaps with some time in a burn unit. :P  Another great "how to book" about building fun but dangerous implements of distructivity. Spud Guns that use a stun gun ignition system, methanol powered pulse jets..... oh my!

Horus Rising by Dan Abnett.

I'm something of a Warhammer 40k buff, and I'd been hearing good things about this Horus Heresy series. It has been hard getting myself to read it though. Which is odd, because I usually love reading just about anything.
