Palentine: I've just started doing a course on the American Civil War for my degree. I know next to nothing about military history, though: are there are any good, and fairly general, books about the military aspects of the war you might recommend (as it seems to feature heavily in your reading)? |

The Companion book to Ken Burns' The Civil War PBS Series is good. I'd also recommend Bruce Catton's Civil War series(Auss would beat me if I didn't) A link to the names of some of his books on the Civil War. Shelby Foote's three volume narrative on the Civil War The Civil War: A Narrative. Vol 1: Fort Sumter to Perryville. The Civil War: A Narrative. Vol 2: Fredicksburg to Meridian. The Civil War: A Narrative. Vol 3: Red River to Appomattox. U.S. Grant- Memoirs of U.S Grant William T. Sherman- Memoirs of William T. Sherman James McPherson- The Battle Cry of Freedom These are just off the top of my head, mate. Auss might know more. |

They storyline's pretty good, but the writing's utter crap. I try to ignore how bad the writing is, though. |
