Meh. I liked Dalton.

And I liked Bond films. As a collective. As a series of movies with certain commonalities. The two Craig movies were not Bond films. I don't care if they're rebooting things, I want nothing to do with it.

Brosnan was good as Bond but his films were shocking. Craig as an actor is leagues ahead of any of his predecessors and Casino Royale is a very good film, I think. Are they 'real' Bond though? Maybe not, but I can't help but think this is a good thing.

I have discovered Californication. It's despicably cheap and tawdry. I like it a lot.

I've also invested in the complete Homicide: Life on the Street and Blackadder. Well, it's cold, and I don't need to have a life at this time of the year.

Just watched Quantum of Solace, and didn't like it. It wasn't a good Bond film; it wasn't a good not-a-Bond film either. Craig is ok, but he's not exactly given much to work with.

Last night I had a fit of nostaglia and rewatched my favourite film, Christiane F.: best cinematic use of "Heroes", most gratuitous close-ups of unsafe needle practices ever.

I had a look at the Radio Times and there's a really poor selection of films on at TV this Christmas, which is a bit disappointing. But I have to work anyway, so I guess I wouldn't have time anyway.

I have to agree, it's just not Christmas without watching that movie.

I found a copy of Cat Ballou in a bargain bin at Sam Goody's. I'm not much of a Jane Fonda fan(except for Barbarella :P ), but Lee Marvin is awesome in the film.

Saw two films about Germany this week.

Baader-Meinhof Complex is a good film, and it gets the balance right, I think, in terms of showing the attraction of the Red Army Faction without glamourising them (though they're all a bit too good-looking, really). But, it's too long, and is oddly paced. And I really wish they'd spent more time on Meinhof, whose transformation is the most interesting yet almost totally unexplored. The subplot with the formation of the anti-terror police is slightly unnecessary.

The Reader is great, and Kate Winslet is fantastic.

More film:

Che - Part 1 bored the pants off me for the first 45 minutes, and I had to battle off an impending coma. But then it picked up a lot once the columns got going. Del Toro is brilliant, it's wonderfully shot, and to my surprise it's quite funny (particularly Camilo Cienfuegos).

Interesting. Peter Bradshaw one-starred it in The Grauniad:

I can't forgive this film for being so shallow and so obtuse on such a subject, and I can't accept it as a parable for war-guilt-by-association suffered by goodish Germans of the next generation. Under the gloss of high production value, under the sheen of hardback good taste, there is something naive and glib and meretricious. It left a very strange taste in my mouth.

Hmm.

First, I guess part of what I liked was the acting and production, both of which his review acknowledges were very good.

Second, I do agree with him that the scene in New York is very odd. I assume it is massively cut from the back, because it really glosses over a lot of the issues; and I disliked her accepting the tin while notionally refusing forgiveness.

Third, I disagree with him that the film is reductive. On the contrary, his analysis is the reductive aspect. The film depicts the Nazi experience as "total" tragedy, and doesn't "reduce it to a semi-erotic romance". I think what he misses is the film is less about Hanna's generation than about Michael's: as his professor says, it is about subsequent generations having to deal with the issue of war guilt by association.

Fourth, even if all the above is bollocks, this kind of issue is one that deserves more discussion, not less, if only to avoid the rank idiocy of "the Pope is a Nazi lol" garbage. As such, a film like this can only be helpful.

Ta for your thoughts. I found it interesting that he reacted so vehemently, and seems to be pretty much alone in his analysis.

Perhaps it's a similar situation to everyone I know adoring Moulin Rouge while I consider the wretched mess less appealing than a steaming lake of monkeyspunk.

I also think Moulin Rouge is poop, if it's any consolation, and everyone I know loves it too.

It didn't even make sense, and the dialogue was clearly written by a recently lobotomised person

I hated Moulin Rouge.

I cried at the end of Milk. I've reevaluated my opinion of Sean Penn after his performance- wonderful actor. There was a bit of disjoint in the the plot, but the overarching message and story was the most important point for me. Probably one of the best movies I've seen; and as a gay man that much more important to me personally.
