I hated Moulin Rouge.

I cried at the end of Milk. I've reevaluated my opinion of Sean Penn after his performance- wonderful actor. There was a bit of disjoint in the the plot, but the overarching message and story was the most important point for me. Probably one of the best movies I've seen; and as a gay man that much more important to me personally.

I haven't seen that yet! I really wan't to though, it's supposed to be excellent.

I'm reading a book about the slayings of high profile people, and the Harvey Milk assasination is covered in the book. I forgot all about that one....of course I was only in either 3rd or 4th grade when it happened.

I really enjoyed it, and like you I found it improved my opinion of Penn, who can be terribly overwrought. My one reservation: the Hispanic boyfriend was ridiculous.

I think ridiculous by design; Diego Luna was portraying an actual person Harvey Milk had a relationship with back in those days. I thought Emile Hirsch was a great choice; those ridiculous glasses just turned him into his character.

I didn't know if I wanted to go see Milk or not since I simply loathe Sean Penn. But, seeing as how there are some that say he was actually good in it I may go see it soon.

Saw Valkyrie last night. Rather enjoyed, and not too much for me to be pedantic about!

You don't think it was all a bit tasteless " Nazi Chic " ?

Not really; the story was broadly accurate (a couple of merged characters and the like, but nothing really appalling), and the feel was right - you wanted Stauffenberg to succede (even if you knew nothing about the regime, this feel was imparted by the film-makers - if that makes sense). As for Nazi chic...well, there buildings were designed by Speer, and their uniforms by Hugo Boss, so it's not exactly the film-makers fault they look look rather stylish.

Oh yes the story was as accurate as one could expect, I just thought that the "pretty" side of national socialism got too much screen time. ;)

Ah, but the ugly side had little relevence to the story - the majority of the officers wanted Hitler out because he was losing the war, and because they realised a war with Russia was unwinnable, not because of the holocaust or the other aspects (in fairness, that does not mean they agreed with them, but it wasn't their priority)

And yet Tom Cruise's character comes off as a heroic :P

Well, he was, wasn't he? Trying to kill the man he thought responsible for Germany's inevitable defeat, responsible for the destruction of the old aristocracy, etc.

Stauffenberg is a huge hero in Germany today.

I think his heroism depends on perspective entirely, there's certainly no concrete evidence that he objected to the final solution, and whoever might have replaced Hitler and ended the war in the east was in no way guarenteed to be any less genocidal, perhaps fewer Jews e.t.c. from eastern europe would have been liquidated but really only as a byproduct of Germany no longer occupying that theatre. More western european jews and others might have met their ends at the hands of the Nazis instead.

And besides if Germany had made peace with Russia, the war in Western Europe could have been prolonged with concurrent loss of both civilian and military lives, indeed with peace in the east securred, who knows what the germans might have been able to achieve in western Europe.

I think Stauffenberg was indifferent about the first of these an outcomes and entirely in favour of a National Socialist German mastery of western Europe.

Stick to the movie, please. You can always start a separate topic on whether or not von Stauffenberg was a real hero.
