Got a new Sam Cooke compilation, which is better than the old one I had.

I've never really listened to James Taylor, but after listening to Aimee Mann's cover of "Shed a Little Light", I'm thinking about trying something.

American Beauty by The Grateful Dead.

And actually, In Rainbows is ok.

Got a bunch of cheap CDs today, plus a new one:
Two Motown compilations, with plenty of H-D-H goodness
A 50-track Stax compilation
A Blondie compilation (Debbie Harry is, I believe, older than my mother, making my feelings for her a source of great inner turmoil)
Another Breeders album

and

Some Stockhausen compilation, on a deeply, deeply mistaken whim.

plus

An advance copy of the new Kitty, Daisy and Lewis album, after going to their show at Pure Groove. Fantastic - I'm going to be getting my lindy hop on and investigating all things Rockabilly further.

I just bought a 5 disk set of Mozart's greatest pieces. I'm pretty excited about it. :D

Only a little, only a little.

Since I'm a whore, I downloaded new applications for my iPhone. There's a nifty new feature called Pandora, which streams music intuitively according to your preferences. If you don't like the song, they make a note and adjust your stream accordingly.

So far I have a Benny Goodman, Sigur Ros, and Bach stream. It works well enough and I've heard some great new music- but the system is dependent on connection, so it cuts out from time to time.

Okay, now I'm jealous of the iPhone. Pandora's awesome, and I'd love to have it on my Instinct.

Kitty, Daisy & Lewis played at Billy Bragg's St George's Day celebration. Cue a guy in the audience shouting out "what's Hawaii got to do with English music and identity". He met with little support.

I'm finally warming to Portishead's Third, but ye gods it's heavy going. I don't think I'll ever like Machine Gun, but Silence and Plastic are pretty damn fine. Still, can't help but think Out of Season showed Beth Gibbons should strike out on her own more often.

Um. Wiki is your friend if the above is all so much gibberish.

I've been curious about this... I have the self titled, Dummy, the double single, and Live At Wherever. I take it Third is a departure from the rest of their stuff?

Not a departure as such, but a big evolutionary step, perhaps. Dummy and Portishead, although a bit out there for the time, were still very tuneful (I'll forgive them anything for Roads). Third is very harsh and aggressive. There's not much in the way of melody, lots of jarring percussive noises (Machine Gun is five minutes of drum machines imitating machine gun fire, and not a lot else!), and plenty of general weirdery. It demands perseverance, especially as there's not a single song that eases you in (All Mine is easier going than Elysium, for instance, and Sour Times is more accessible than Strangers).

And then there's Deep Water, which is nowt but vocals and, er, ukulele. Now that's a departure.

It's worth a go, definitely, but be prepared to endure the first listen in anticipation of enjoying maybe the fourth...

I can't emphasise the following enough: Out of Season is beautiful.

I don't think I've ever used so many italics. Sorry!

EDIT: Brilliantly, it turns out that Machine Gun was the first single released over here. I can just picture the looks of horror on the faces of Radio 1 listeners...

Hm. Definitely sounds worth a listen. Oddly enough, my introduction to them was from the double single, specifically, the Airbus Reconstruction of Sour Times. I can see what you're saying about difficulty in getting in, but then again... I like Einstuerzende Neubauten, so I'm cool with stuff barely distinguishable from noise.

Still... it's a pity that they seem to be downplaying her vocals. I always loved her voice.

I'm currently listening to the Korobushka repeatedly on youtube in the hope of learning it by ear without looking up the words or, indeed, speaking the language it's sung in.

I have odd hobbies. This is another one of them.

I really like Third. I think it shows they have variety (there's a better word than that, but I had a crushing day at work and can't think of it - dexterity? range?) without being gimmicky, and though it is difficult to get into, it's worth a listen. It's also refreshing to have someone write an album, rather than a series of unrelated singles and filler.

Currently listening to Motown compilation, Noah and the Whale, [size0]Sugababes, Led Zep, and Ramones. Shut up, it's been a long day.

(Sorry for posting so much here and nowhere else, by the way.)

Have discovered some great London artists on my "visiting every pub in Camden in quick succession" treks of the past weeks, particularly a singer-songwriter called Marwood who does a great cover of "Willin'"

Listening to: Hot Chip's Made in the Dark, which was on special offer in Rough Trade and is well worth it at first listen, and Gillian Welch's Time (The Revelator), including the wonderful "I Dream a Highway". How she is not a bigger star, I do not understand.

Gillian Welch is great.

I live about twenty-five minutes walk from Camden Town, in Tufnell Park. Any particular pubs you'd care to recommend? I've been quite disappointed with the emo-fests on offer, though the Green Note on Parkway is a notable exception.
