Amusingly enough, almost immediately after winning the primary, Oberweis started attack ads on the incumbent democrat around here. He's been boned out of three elections (state senator, US senator, and governor) in the primaries, so he's dragging out the big guns this time. I guess he really wants to win. Still... seems a bit early for this sort of thing.

Er... sorry. Local election...

Anyone else seeing this for state elections?

As early primaries and open primaries have proven an unmitigated disaster in California, state law now mandates (closed) June primaries for all state offices, which I suppose does not include the president. So, not to be left in the dust during the frontloadpalooza Super Tuesday "national primary," California moved its presidential contest to February, but in accordance with state law kept the primaries for state offices in June. That way, we get two primary election seasons for the price of two! "Mitt Romney" & friends robo-called my house at least two dozen times this month; if Brian Bilbray starts doing the same for the congressional election, I'm writing in Mary Carey.

...In other news, yet another Republican gets unduly harassed by the liberal music industry. They even did it to Dole back in '96, for using "I'm a Soul Man" at campaign events. You'll note this never happens to Democrats.

Foster beat Oberweis 53 to 47 percent. Was that expected?

Yeah, I hadn't realized it was a special election. They'll be running again in November.

It's a little unexpected, considering they were going for Denny Hastert's seat and that district was a Republican stronghold for 20-some years. However, Oberweis is now 0 for 4 on elections. His ads are very strident and questionably honest. I think people are getting sick of him. The biggest question is if Foster will be able to hold on to that seat come November.

Of course, the Dems are spinning this as the biggest victory ever that shows that the whole country wants Democrats in every seat everywhere. Blah blah blah.

Ahem.

Anyway, two amusing things:

1) People are complaining about low turnout because it was on a Saturday. Haven't people been whining for years that weekend elections would increase turnout?

2) They're suing each other. Well, Oberweis is suing the DCCC, and they've filed a complaint against him with federal elections officials. Sheej.

Heh. Yeah. The Dems were treating the special election in my district much the same way. It happened just months prior to the '06 midterms, so everyone was fussed about it being a "predictor" for the general election. They were quick to emphasize that it was just a "local election" once the Republican won, however.

You know, I'm gonna run for the House in a few years just to see if someone can finally oust Mike Honda...

Just a few more days until General explodes...

I prefer to think of it as a few more days until the political ads disappear. I'm tired of opening my mailbox only to find more political garbage than actual mail. The worst mailings I've received were for someone who wanted me to vote for them for Clark County commissioner, which is kind of hard for me to do since I live in Cowlitz County.

And don't get me started about the TV ads, I'm close enough to the Oregon border that I get Oregon TV stations and with them Oregon's political ads. Which means that every time I turn on the TV I'm hearing Jeff Merkley and Gordon Smith bash each other, I swear those two haven't run a single positive ad this entire campaign. :auss:

Here's some more predictors.

And Flib, I feel your pain. Being in Chicago, most of the major media outlets are head in both Wisconsin and Indiana. So while Illinois is totally locked up for Obama, I still gets ads for him. ON EVERY FUCKING COMMERCIAL BREAK.

I'm getting really sick of it.

Just two more days until all those fucking proposition ads disappear from the airwaves! :w00t:

Especially those obnoxious pro-Prop 8 ads -- "they're gonna make us teach gay marriage to our kids waaah!!" Shut the fuck up.

I literally wanted to sock my brother last night, for repeatedly honking at pro-8 demonstrators on street corners. I don't know where all these people are coming from, but they will soon be gone as well.

...sorry, might as well use this thread for something; if you have a local race in your state you want to comment on (including a Senate race in your state), do so here. General Senate predictions, use that other thread.

I keep seeing stem cell attack ads claiming Michigan is going to have to pay out the nose if the proposition passes. It's totally untrue, but I get angry everytime I see it.

By the way: what did you make of the wording of that proposition? My friend voted in Michigan through Democrats Abroad, and showed me their ballot. Prop #2 was so confusingly written, it seemed a bit like creating legal loopholes just for the sake of it.

None of our local races are very close or very interesting. We do have some ballot measures to consider though.

Proposed Constitutional Amendment No. 1 would remove archaic language involving poll taxes and preventing "idiots or insane persons" from voting. Idiots and insane persons have been voting in Arkansas for years and years so I see no reason to retain this language. It would also give the legislature the power to determine who can be a voting official. We currently are the only state that doesn't give the legislature this power. I'll vote for this one.

Proposed Constitutional Amendment No. 2 would shift Arkansas’ state budgeting from a two-year cycle to an every year cycle. Would require the legislature to meet in even-numbered years for 30-day budget sessions. Currently, the Arkansas Constitution provides for regular legislative sessions in odd-numbered years only. Meh. For, I guess.

Proposed Constitutional Amendment No. 3. Would establish a state lottery. For. I'm tired of driving to Oklahoma to buy Powerball tickets.

Proposed Initiative Act No. 1: Unmarried Couple Adoption Ban. This is a back door attempt to keep gay and lesbian couples from adopting or serving as foster parents. The trouble is it would ban all unmarried couples from adopting or serving as foster parents. Against.

Question No. 1 would allow "the issuance of $300 million for the financing and refinancing of the development of water, waste disposal, water pollution control, abatement and prevention, drainage, irrigation, flood control, and wetlands and aquatic resources projects". This makes sense. Currently, if the Natural Resources Commission runs out of bonding authority, cities have to turn to local banks to get credit for water and sewer projects. For.

Might as well do mine too:

PROPOSITION 1A. SAFE, RELIABLE HIGH-SPEED PASSENGER TRAIN BOND ACT. Costly and unnecessary. Against.

PROPOSITION 2. STANDARDS FOR CONFINING FARM ANIMALS. INITIATIVE STATUTE. I am generally against cruelty to animals, but the way this is written it would negatively affect food-safety standards, public health and the price of groceries. My local paper says no and so does Governor Schwarzenegger. Against.

PROPOSITION 4. WAITING PERIOD AND PARENTAL NOTIFICATION BEFORE TERMINATION OF MINOR'S PREGNANCY. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT. For.

PROPOSITION 5. NONVIOLENT DRUG OFFENSES. SENTENCING, PAROLE AND REHABILITATION. INITIATIVE STATUTE. George Soros' newest attempt to subvert California's anti-drug laws. Against.

PROPOSITION 6. POLICE AND LAW ENFORCEMENT FUNDING. CRIMINAL PENALTIES AND LAWS. INITIATIVE STATUTE. Critics say it will cost too much, but my local sheriff has endorsed it. I trust him more than I do the Los Angeles Times editorial board. For.

PROPOSITION 7. RENEWABLE ENERGY GENERATION. INITIATIVE STATUTE. Will undoubtedly raise the cost of electricity. Against.

PROPOSITION 8. ELIMINATES RIGHT OF SAME-SEX COUPLES TO MARRY. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT. The proponents told me to "Think of the children!" I thought about the children, and decided I hate them. Against.

PROPOSITION 9. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. VICTIM'S RIGHTS. PAROLE. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT AND STATUTE. We already have a Victims Bill of Rights in California. This is just an excessive add-on. Against.

PROPOSITION 10. ALTERNATIVE FUEL. VEHICLES AND RENEWABLE ENERGY. BONDS. INITIATIVE STATUTE. I'll approve the bonds if T. Boone Pickens is willing to pay for them, too. Against.

PROPOSITION 11. REDISTRICTING. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT AND STATUTE. I read the Constitution and decided California's voters have no right to rewrite it. Legislatures draw the district lines, not some ad-hoc committee. Against.

Michigan's props:

Proposal 08-1: A LEGISLATIVE INITIATIVE TO PERMIT THE USE AND CULTIVATION OF MARIJUANA FOR SPECIFIED MEDICAL CONDITIONS

For. It's a step in the right direction to decriminalizing and destigmatizing a drug that harms no one, originally banned because of racial fear. Not just because I'm a hippy liberal college student. Because I'm not a hippy, I'm "cooperative."

Proposal 08-2: A PROPOSAL TO AMEND THE STATE CONSTITUTION TO ADDRESS HUMAN EMBRYO AND HUMAN EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH IN MICHIGAN

For. It makes sense. I don't find the ballot language that confusing, and any legal wrangling they do is to circumvent opposition and existing laws. It made perfect sense to me, at least.
