Sarah Palin endorses Rick Perry.

I find it quite amusing and ironic that Palin is endorsing someone who pretty much ranks among the worst Governors in Texas history. This is a governor who had a hard time beating Kinky Friedman in a governor's race. I mean, seriously, the man's most noteworthy "accomplishment" (other than hair that can withstand gale force winds) is letting his own freaking house get burned down. Really? Seriously? Rick Perry?

I really, really, really hope that Palin and Perry form a ticket for the 2012 election. That would be a gift from the gods.

I'd actually be worried about Jindal.

As for Kinky, I agree with you on both counts, but I'm still mad at him because, ironically enough, of Rick Perry. If Kinky had dropped out of the '06 governor's race when it became obvious he wouldn't win, Chris Bell (the Democrat running against Perry) might have had a better shot to win, freeing us from the lump of useless flesh known as Rick Perry. Admittedly, it still would've been close, and Perry probably would've still won. But the fact that Perry only got 39% of the vote in that election, only 10% more than Bell, makes me wonder what could've been.

I said among the worst, not the worst. :P

Bush actually wasn't horrible as governor, not any more so than most Texas governors anyway; the whole lot have been subpar at best, with rare exceptions.

OK, without threadjacking too much on the whole Texas thing...

Rick Perry supports seceding from the Union (well, not really).

I don't get this, though: if he is so concerned about federal restrictions on stimulus spending, why not simply reject the stimulus funds?

Because Rick Perry is a hypocrite and a moron. He wants to have it both ways, while still looking tough and trying to boost his re-election bid. Kay Bailey Hutchison is going to hand Perry's ass to him though. I don't know whether to be happy or sad about that.

Kinky Friedman is probably going to run again, hastening the Perry ass-handing by undercutting any viable Democratic candidates (again). :kennygettinangry:

As to Perry's "assertion of Texas sovereignty" and threats to ignore Federal legislative mandate, all I can say is: I'd love to see him try it. The Civil War, and the civil rights movement, both spring to mind as an example of how well that works out.

He only got 39% of the vote in the last election. The only reason the idiot keeps winning is because too many other idiots run against him. Somehow I don't think that's going to save him against Hutchison, who is a bit more popular down here. No big names ran against Perry last time (other than Friedman, whose candidacy is a joke candidacy no matter how hard he claims it isn't).

You know, I was only kidding the other day when I called Rick Perry a secessionist. We hardly ever see eye to eye on things, Altan, but here I really have to agree with you: Rick Perry is an idiot.

As far as Kay Bailey Hutchison goes, Texas has a proud tradition of tough lady governors (Ann Richards, "Ma" Ferguson), so more power to her. :auss:

Yeah, I think I could tolerate Kay Bailey. I'd rather have someone more like Ann Richards, but almost anyone is better than Perry at this point.

Perry's trying to pander to the conservative base. I think it's going to backfire on him. He'll gather all the real far-right nutjobs, but a lot of the people on the right here are not going to take kindly to his flirting with secessionists. In particular, Texas has a large military and former military population, and I'm willing to bet Perry just pissed pretty much all of them off by flirting with people who are advocating treason against the country those soldiers fought to defend.

Desperation = really dumb moves.

The headline on Drudge's website:

POLL: 75% OF TEXANS WOULD VOTE TO STAY IN USA

A fifth of Texans actually want to secede! :roflmao:

That's an interesting article. I know for a fact that there is still a secession lobby group that meets every year to discuss suceeding from the U.S. Now as to the legality, secession IS legal. The US Supreme Court tried once before to prove that secession was an illegal act and was punishable with treason, which is why Jefferson Davis spent nearly a decade in prison, but were unable to prove without a shadow of a doubt that it was unconstitutional.

Every now and then I hear about how the new secession movements are gaining momentum, but to be honest it's never going to happen. First, there was a war that pretty much summed up what would happen if the union were disolved. Now the south had the chance to win, BUT differences in political opinions among the different states coupled with the fact that they were ill equiped to wage any sort of long term war, let alone deal with the blockade, snuffed that fire out quickly.

Second, I don't entirely believe what the polling shows. It's much the same thing that happened in 1861. If you were to poll the residents of the states that left the Union, I'm sure it would have been similar to what this poll says. I think it boils down to how much knowledge your average citizen has about such things. The politicans had their own agenda, and they told everyone it was the right thing to do.

Anyways, things have changed a lot since then. I think most people are too afraid of what it would lead to. I know I'd have a fit if my current state government were on their own, our governor has already given Obama a hand job for bailout money. I swear they have sqauandered money left and right and there is no end to it.

A war was fought to allow Texas admission to the Union, and now after all those years of federal support and investment they want out so they can demonstrate their rugged independence. As long as the US keeps Austin, I don't really mind.

Texas doesn't need to seccede, to cause Washington fits. All the Texas Government has to do is vote to split into five states. They are the only state allowed that power.
