Texas isn't going anywhere; the secessionist dipshits are thankfully a small minority.

As for Perry, he can't even get some of his fellow Republicans in the Legislature to back his idiocies. He's toast, he just doesn't know it yet.

A war was fought to allow Texas admission to the Union, and now after all those years of federal support and investment they want out so they can demonstrate their rugged independence. As long as the US keeps Austin, I don't really mind.

On the off chance that Texas ever does try to secede, I want Austin, San Antonio and Houston to secede from Texas. The secessionists can have Dallas, which I don't care very much for.

Why Austin, I wonder?

1. My sort-of-argh-girlfriend comes from there originally.

2. More importantly, my favourite band (Explosions in the Sky) comes from there. And the music scene, in general, seems pretty good. I wouldn't want to have to change dollars into Confederate money just to go to Austin City Limits.

Plus Austin is, apparently, the #1 city in the world to live in, so it seems like it'd be worth hanging onto.

In addition to Gruen's salient points, I'd say that the high-tech industry here, and the fact it has one of the best universities in the state, also make Austin a good place to hang onto. It's also quite pleasant a place to look at; lots of green and hilly, unlike most of Texas, which can get rather flat and boring. We have a pretty decent river here too, which Austinites, being perverse, insist on calling a lake.

That being said, I've lived in Austin for damn near ten years now, and its charms, though lovely, have worn thin for me, so I will most likely be moving in the next few months. I'll still be in Texas though, close enough to Austin to visit it on a fairly-regular basis.

There are so many things wrong with Ron Paul's interview that I can't begin to sum them all up.

Americans have accepted the principle of secession all along? Really? I guess the whole Civil War thing didn't really happen. Maybe it was just staged, like the moon landings.

Oh, and no one challenged New England's revolt from England as "unconstitutional" because New England wasn't separating from the US, which didn't even exist at the time.

I am morbidly curious if Ron Paul, and the others defending "secession" remarks, would've been so quick to defend people who suggested parts of the US should secede during the Bush years. I'm sure they would've jumped right on that train.

eek.

Perry now leads Hutchison by 12 points among GOPers. He also claims never to have supported seceding:

Quote:

Here's what I really think about the issue. It was an effort by the mainstream media to deflect from the discussion, the debate, and the intellectual engagement on the 10th Amendment. They are scared to death to debate and to talk about the 10th Amendment. So therefore, they try to find this side issue. The side issue for them was that an individual at one of the tea parties said, "secede."

I mean we sell t-shirts in Texas that have that on it all the time. Come on. It's a part of the Texas mystic. It is part of what we pride ourselves on in the state of Texas. We're able to say, "You know what, we're different. We were a republic on our own. We left the country at one time."

Now if a bunch of pointy-headed lawyers want to go have the discussion over whether it can happen again -- I'll let them do that. The fact of the matter is that I don't want to secede. I want to help America heal itself. I want to help get this country back on track and I happen to think our state can help lead that effort.

So, those that want to go off on this rabbit trail of saying "Oh my gosh, he actually almost, almost darn near said the word succession. Isn't he a strange one?" Well, that's just a deflection from the real issue.

On the Dems' side, 81% either don't know or have no opinion on who should be their nominee. :augh:

This is disheartening, but we've still got a long dance ahead of us before the primary. I wonder how well Perry will continue to do if he keeps making boneheaded decisions like vetoing multiple bills that had broad bipartisan support. Hutchison hasn't seriously started campaigning yet; she needs to start doing so.

On the Democratic side, the complete lack of a compelling candidate is a problem. I'm not fond of Hutchison, but I'd take her over Perry anyday.

Speaking of nutty governors, Mark Sanford is providing some amusing news fodder.

Without wanting to threadjack too much, good Lord!! Is there a governor left in America who isn't completely inept or a total asshole?!

As far as governors go, I dare say Sarah Palin's looking pretty good right now, huh? :P

Maybe we should just rename this the "Stupid Governor Tricks" thread; it appears that we wouldn't have a lack of material to keep the thread going, from either side of the aisle.

Texas does grow a rare and particular kind of nut. I tend to stay in Austin and ignore the kookiness that emerges from, well, pretty much all the rest of this state.

Oh, and not to poke at your post from earlier too much, but is Sarah Palin still looking good right now? :P
