http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_swine_flu_emergency Is this anything to be deeply concerned about? What do the rest of you think? Until today I had dismissed it as media-driven hysteria but now there are possible cases popping up in five different US states and in Canada, NZ, Spain, Israel. So it appears to be passing from human to human quite well. The age group it affects is troubling as well (us). |

I haven't gotten any face masks yet but I was thinking about stealing some rubber gloves from work tomorrow. I went to the store and bought a big bag of rice and two big bags of beans just in case they order everyone to stay indoors. I don't think it'll come to that but better safe than sorry. |

They've ( generic "they" ) been predicting a major plague of zoological origin for ages, it is a bit scary. Lets hope it goes the way of Bird Flu.

Yep. It has obviously mutated to allow easier transmission from human to human but it's possible that in becoming more contagious it also became less lethal. The deaths were all early cases and I'm not aware of anyone outside Mexico dying from it. If it mutates to become highly contagious but not lethal then it's no worse than the regular flu. |

Someone edited the "international responses" section on the wiki page to read something like "The Prime Minister of Madagascar will reportedly hold cabinet meetings to discuss the closure of seaports and air travel to prevent the spread of the disease." Honestly? I'm worried, not really of catching it and dying... but mainly because I live with 15 other people where the community hygiene isn't always as good as it should be (I've been sick on average more this year than in the past five, and I think it has something to do with not cleaning the house up to snuff) I tend to worry about community health - not to mention the other cooperative houses that have community meals and twice the number of people. Yelda's got the right idea- I've got several pounds of rice and bags of potatoes, and the house has flour and baking needs, and if we just focus more on keeping our food production areas as spotlessly (regularly) clean as possible, and just keep the rest of the house even more clean, and watch ourselves, I don't think we'll have a problem if it spreads here. Which I don't think it will. |

It's the next phase of the government plan to make us all stay indoors, sever physical human contact and communicate only via electronic means, thereby making it easier for the powers-that-be to control and manipulate us as they strive to create a bovine sub-class that will be used in much the same way as the poor drones in The Matrix, I mean it's so obvious when you look at it with a clear head, and once they've managed to kill off enough of the populace with the disease they'll then use the bodies as fodder to feed us as we atrophy in our seats, tubes pumping swill into our veins while our eyes are glued to a monitor that feeds us soothing, soporific dross, and the last sparks of rebellion will die like cooling embers, and we will be utterly passive, utterly submissive to every government whim, and we will love Big Brother. Sorry. I've been wine tasting. |

Meh, I'm tempted towards media hype. News agencies always have a feild day everytime something like this comes (MMR? Bird Flu? BSE? Even SARS to a certain extent). It's either going to kill me or not. Most likely not. So why worry? |

Ever since reading The Road I have realized I am so woefully underprepared for any sort of apocalyptic event that my only hope is to study hard and become important enough to earn a place in The Bunker. More seriously, I do feel very bad for everyone seriously affected by this. |

See what happens when the chattering classes hyperventilate over a minor epidemic? A lot of people look stupid afterward. Then there are idiots like Joe Biden, who always look stupid regardless: [doHTML] <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Rw1h2t355Bo&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Rw1h2t355Bo&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> [/doHTML] @eco: your reply is divine. I really must go wine tasting more often. |
