It also seems that Pat Buchanan and Obama are on the same page(huge Shock!). I was reading Pat's column in today's Trib(ie.Pittsburgh Tribune-Review), and he believes that America shouldn't get involved or give moral support to the protestors. Personally, I think this just further makes anything Pat says or writes more irrelevant. Pat is an anti-semetic, xenophobic, isolationist. I disagree of course. I was brought up beleiving that American stands for something great. We were founded on principles of Liberty and freedom overcoming the forces of Tyranny. Even moral support is something. We all knew that the hardliners in Iran were going to crush the protestors, whether we said anything or not. I just wonder....WWRD(What Would Reagan Do?) |

That's a pretty naive thing for you to say, and knowing that you're not a naive person, I'm surprised. I'm not going to argue the merits of staying silent on the issue, I believe it was in the best interests of the people of Iran for us to give them quiet support, and you don't, we'll leave it at that. Look I've been following this closely for a few days now, so I'm a bit shook up at the current trend of events, but I will say this: Ideas are bulletproof. It's not done yet. |

I don't see his statement as naive at all. I think it's pretty realistic given the history of the Iranian regime. I mean, are any of us shocked that the mullahs are having the protests crushed? Is there anything we could have done to stop it? I don't think so. As for Obama voicing support, he should forcefully assert our support for political freedom and the rights of the Iranian people. I'm not so sure he should express support for Mousavi himself because as far as I can tell he's only incrementally better than Ahmadinejad. But Obama really should have come out more forcefully in support of the people and especially in support of their right to protest. The ultimate goal for the west should be the overthrow of the mullahs and the destruction of the Iranian theocracy. As long as they are the real power there it won't really matter who is or isn't in the elected government. Hopefully these protests can be the beginning of a process to bring about that overthrow, but it's likely to be a long and bloody process and this is just the first act. |

I think American vocal support would just damage the opposition cause - give the Ayatollahs and Ahmadinnerjacket recourse to the classic "Moussavi is a puppet in the hands of the western imperialist evil pig dog swine" and give them further excuse to clamp down. |

When your title is "Supreme Leader", you don't need justification or excuses. This is a clear case of being terrified of doing the wrong thing. Decisive people make mistakes from time to time, but they act. The administration's limp-wristed reaction is frankly disgusting and cowardly. People are being shot and killed by their own government, and our president can't even find his spine. But at least his dog got some ice cream. |

Because choosing to not to put the protesters at even greater risk is clearly not making a choice? The whole "some people are going to die anyhow, so we shouldn't give a crap about making the Iranian government even more bold" line is... confusing. There is no right choice for Obama here, either he plays into the hands of the Ayatollah or he gets it up the ass from the conservatives. He's biting the bullet and letting you guys have your line of attack. Go for it. The fact that the majority of protesters don't want any overt(to say he's said nothing is a lie ) US support is of course inconsequential. The whole concept of US support is inconsequential when it comes to Iran. This is up to the Iranian people, they'll be the ones to die for this. We can do nothing but provide our moral support, and that's what we're doing. It still hurts to watch it. |

They put it back with the proper age warnings. Her name was Neda. Her father is right there with her telling her not to be afraid. Until the blood, at which point he screams for her to stay. |

You took that quopte out of context, mate. You missed the part I added WWRD. I feel we should give moral support, but we should also accept the fact that the Mullahs are going to crack down, no matter what we say. They remember the Revolution of 1979(so Do I). They know that if the people succede, that the mullahs might be the first to be shot afterwards. |
