D'oh.

The buzz I hear is that he should politely decline. He won't, but it's be a nice thought.

Even some die-hard leftist activists I know are scratching their heads and saying "the hell?"

They want to know why people like Morgan Tsvangirai, Aung San Suu Kyi, the Dalai Lama, etc. haven't been recognized.

The simple answer is that it's a racket and doesn't accomplish anything. The long answer is that it's a complex process that factors in politics, popularity, and other non-peace related factors to give a man a shiny medal. So, kinda like the Olympics...

I wonder if I started rabbiting on about how I want to see the end of nukes, war, famine, pestilence, and those ketchup sachets you find in motorway services station will earn me a Nobel Prize...

First you have to be imprisoned without trial for many years, or exiled from your country because you say unpopular things.

Or get elected president.

...do you think you could provide us with amusing links as the cacophony unfolds? :captspauld:

edit: minus Palentine's entertaining rant, of course. ;)

I'll see what I can dig up. I think you can fill in the blanks though. :D

Well, there's this. :D

And on a more serious note, this:

Jennifer Rubin

...(David) Ignatius explains: “The Nobel committee is expressing a collective sigh of relief that America has rejoined the global consensus. They’re right. It’s a good thing.”

No, it’s a bad thing, a very bad thing, because he got it — as one must to snag a Nobel Peace Prize — by denigrating American values and exceptionialism, demonstrating an aversion to moral clarity, refusing to call out despotic regimes (the Iranian students will be thrilled to know that they give prizes to leaders who think of them as an annoyance), disarming America, repeatedly distorting history to fit false narratives, refusing to stand up to international bullies (excuse me, members in good standing in the international community), and spinning a great deal of hooey about global wealth-sharing and environmental extremism.

And here’s the thing: these regimes don’t like America any more than they used to. They love a U.S. president who shares their disdain for America’s role in the world. So they gave him a prize. “America Isn’t That Great” Man of the Year isn’t something to cheer. Well, unless you work at the White House.

Finally, yeah, I know. Splitnazi!!! Sue me.

Felix;

That guy actually had some very good points before he descended into reactionary neocon madness at the end. I was nodding my head in agreement until his knee started jerking spastically.

Well it was intended as an example of a blogger becoming apoplectic. :D

Truly, though he tricked us! Tricked us into making himself seem rational and sane and intelligent, and then BAM.

This one's pretty funny:

Quote:

Former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Jack Danforth tells NRO that President Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize is “completely ridiculous.”

“What has he done?” asks Danforth, a former Republican U.S. senator from Missouri. “In eight months, if anything, what he has done is make himself popular with Europe, at least according to the polls. It’s a joke.”

“He’s announced the closing of Guantanamo Bay,” says Danforth. “He’s announced that he’s getting rid of enhanced interrogation. He’s announced he’s getting out of Iraq. He’s clearly revisiting his prior commitment to Afghanistan. And, on various occasions, he’s gone around the world apologizing for the United States. That’s what the Europeans like to hear.”

“This is totally laughable,” says Danforth. Citing the Nobel committee’s high praise, Danforth says he worries about President Obama’s hubris. “My concern is that the president actually believes these things about himself,” he says. “This is part of the apotheosis of Barack Obama. The president is already pretty taken with himself. Now, he gets the Nobel Peace Prize. It’s just further encouragement.”

What should the president say when he goes to Oslo? “He sure doesn’t need my advice,” says Danforth. “He’s the orator of all orators. I’m sure it will be fabulous oratory, and yet another example of telling Europe what it wants to hear.”

This is a former UN Ambassador, mind you, and it ain't even John Bolton!

It does somewhat hamper his ability to blow the crap out of guys in turbans.

Tsvangirai would have made far more sense.

Yeah, you're right, he probably doesn't...luckily his unmanned predator drones still do. And they might be coming after us soon enough! You're either with us or the terrorists; that's the (bafflingly ironic) slogan of the Democrat Party these days...
