Governor Joe just won. The Senate will be Democratic.

Snyder is polling at 65% over Bernero, thank god. I don't think Michigan would survive having a Union stooge in Lansing.

I'm not so happy about Walberg polling ahead of Schauer, however. He was the equivalent of a Tea Party candidate back when he ousted Joe Schwarz- ridiculously religious and an unthinking reaganite- no innovation. Schauer didn't do much, true, but I would rather have a man that doesn't think gays are evil in office.

It's a horse race in Illinois, and fun to listen to the changing numbers. Chicago's returns came in first, giving the state-wide Dems a big lead, but as down state comes in, the GOP is picking up votes quickly.

Amusingly, there's a chance we'll have two senators elected. See, there was a vote for an interim senator to fill from today until inauguration day, because having the Governor appoint Obama's replacement was, apparently, against the Illinois constitution. Anyway, there were two votes for Illinois senator: one to fill this gap, and one for the 6 year term. It's possible that Kirk will win the full term but lose the interim.

Only in Illinois.

Wait, I apparently missed something. Did Burris resign in there somewhere?

Also, it looks like my man Feingold lost - barring some crazy-unforseen "come from behind" victory with early voting or the still-out-districts, etc. Boo. *kicks at dirt*

EDIT/UPDATE: He has conceded. *sadface*

However, in good news, my nation has decided to start producing some vodka as a result of this election. Or, rather, me drinking alcohol (i.e. vodka) tonight made me realize that that's an export that Mousebumples could have/exploit/etc. So, ya know, RP upside at least!

I think this election will be remembered as the Big Money election- billions poured in from out-of-state donors to candidates. It's disgusting the way people from a world away can influence an election like that.

Thanks, Supreme Court. We owe you.

My cousin took this picture at the Rally for Sanity (and/or Fear) last weekend ... I think it's fairly appropriate for the situation:

Nah. Here's the Cliff's Notes version:

  • Obama becomes president, leaving a vacancy.
  • Lotta crap happens with Blagojevich, but he ends up appointing Burris.
  • State courts get involved and eventually decide that the law giving the governor the right to appoint replacements is unconstitutional.
  • Courts then say that we need to have a special election.
  • To save money, courts also say that there won't be another primary and that people already running for senate will also run in the special election.
  • And only them.
  • Burris sues, saying that the people of Illinois really want him to serve those 8 or 12 or whatever weeks and he should be able to run in the special election (perhaps instead of Alexi).
  • Courts, along with everyone in Illinois, hurt themselves laughing their asses off at Burris and he's told to fuck off (or his suit is dismissed).

So, if I understand the timing of this properly, Burris is out, possibly as soon as tomorrow. Alexi already conceded the race to Kirk, but I would assume Burris is in until the final, certified counts are in. But regardless, Kirk will be in the senate during the zombie-congress period between now and January and then in January, he'll start his full term.

Banning corporate donations isn't likely to happen, at least not as long as there are corporate taxes. There was something in our history about taxation and representation, I think.

Also, it's not like it's anything new. I mean, unions have been pulling this crap since long before Citizen's United.

We've got a whole bunch of limits on election funding/advertising/donations, and every election we talk about some new ones. But, sadly, I think the academic who formulated the "Hydraulics Principle of Election Funding" got it right.

It basically says, "Money's like water, the damn stuff's gonna seep in somewhere."

Today, I'm hoping to paint the town, the county, the state, heck even the nation RED.

Nyahh, I hope the wheels fall off your little red wagon! :D

(I hope that means what I think it means. It's an insult I heard from a new kid in childhood that made no sense at all to the kids in our neighbourhood, because none of us had little red wagons, we had billy-carts. But it sounded mild.)

They did. But first to the little red wagon. IIRC the most popular kids wagon in the early 20th century was produced by "Radio Flyer" and they generally were painted red. The reason for this, I believe was that red was the color for fire trucks and you know how boys love to play fireman.

Anyway, On Long Island / NY, the Governor is still blue (Prince Andrew Coumo will be crowned King of New York and a part of the Blessed New York Trinity - Governor, Speaker of the House, Senate Majority Leader - in January), the stae Assembly is Blue and the State Senate is Red. Chucky and his bride are still in the US Senate. Tim Bishop will still represent us in congress although thank God he is in the minority now and in no position to steal money from the people and pretend he is Robin Hood.

So while Palidino didn't win I'm still MAD AS HELL.

The good news, the last Attorney General who became governor here had to resign because of scandal. I'm hoping that we only get a few months of this dirtbag before he gets arrested for something. The only thing he did as Attorney General was not arrest his friends. The only thing he did when he ran HUD was ... oh yea, cause the God Damned crisis that caused the entire world to depress.

There ya go, RWP. The whole country painted red!

I was already bored an hour into the results. But I did get a kick out of Comedy Central's calling Boehner's election as Speaker "a tremendous victory for Orange-Americans." :D

edit: and as a Cuban American, Rubio's win was somewhat gratifying as well.

I generally avoided most of the election coverage. I've gone cold turkey off of NPR (the shakes are gone ... really) after the Juan Williams incident. Politics can get a little personal with me and I am the type to get really really mad. Not a good thing when driving (on my way home after the chamber choir rehearsal) or before bed (because then I can't get to sleep).

How can I put it mildly, (Insert five paragraphs of descriptions here from those Foul Mouthed Dolphins) Andrew Coumo is a Liar and a Crook. The still Speaker of the House Sheldin Silver is no better. That makes 2/3 of the state trinity in a solid alliance to kill babies and kill seniors (yes they really want things like non voluntary euthanasia and simple determination of death decisions to assist with easy organ harvesting). I'll probably lobby for the Long Island Coalition for Life this year in Albany ... into the Lion's den once again.

My still current congressman Tim (wiley as the devil) Bishop was the person whose staff screwed around with my Dad (and Mom) trying to get him the Purple Heart he deserves (for his POW years in WWII not for the fact that he was shot after he was freed by Usysses S. Grant - no really - after spotting an enemy pigeon - they were hungry - because that was friendly fire). After six months not being able to contact the office they send back a packet with the name of my Grandfather (who was born in Firfir Scotland and didn't serve in the US Army whatsoever) telling him to start the whole process over (please submit 20K forms in triplicate on parchment paper ... etc)

Although the guy who lost to him two years ago just got the State Senate (not in my district alas) so there is the consolation prize.

The only strange thought is that somewhere in Califorina, they actually elected a dead person (she had died in October). I am so putting that into my NaNo this year.
