England 1 - United States 1

Could someone who understands the game a little better than me give an analysis? Our one goal was a fluke, but other than that we seemed to play fairly well, as far as my untrained eyes could tell. Are we....good?

I'm currently working out whether I can be bothered getting up at 4:30 to watch the Australia-Germany game. Currently leaning towards 'yes', given the public holiday tomorrow.

I watched that match and was rooting for Australia. It was ugly.

(Psst! 'Rooting' means something quite different in Australian English!)

Substitute "cheering for", "pulling for", "supporting" etc.

No.

Not jingoism or anything, I don't really care about the England team, but no, the US team is not good; in particular, they had very poor defending. They got better as the game went on, I think, though.

I have to admit, looking through the scorelines, it's easy to see why football isn't that popular in the US: 1-0, 1-0, 1-1, 1-0...

Football's too defensive these days, which has rendered it dull. If you can find them, watch some games from the 1930's - two defenders was considered the norm, with four attackers and three midfield ("Christmas tree" formation), passing only occurred when one was about to be tackled, scorelines were higher, and best of all referress wore jackets and ties and goalkeepers flat caps - which just makes it awesome.

Though, of course, if one wants high scores, cricket is kind of the way to go, the the scores are somewhat convuluted (for example, if the team that bats first gets 459 "all out" and the the team with second innings gets 315 for 8, that is a draw...)

and why have 90 minutes of play, when you can have 5 days. plus you have to love any sport in which you stop for tea. :D

I don't know, I still prefer a sport where 90+MPH brushbacks are the norm, and not the exception. :P

Now if only you rugby fanatics would finally see the light, and admit the superiority of the forward pass....

As for the world cup, I consider a draw with the Brits to be a victory.....most commentators didn't give the USA any chance. :)

I've been trying to convince them for years, and people still don't watch Aussie Rules.

I actually watch it when it comes on our local PBS station! Mostly for the following reasons:

1. It's like soccer, but faster, higher scoring, and more interesting.
2. The shorts.

After today, I really hope the USA go through. They deserved a win, and played so much better than England did by comparison.

And Australia maintains a mathematical chance to get through the group stage! We just need to a) beat Serbia, and b) hope that Ghana beats Germany. Without both of these, we're sunk.
