John Oliver makes people laugh for the sole reason of being English.

However, I love the trope of Jon Stewart signing off with a statement that just sets him off his rocker. That's ethnocentric comedy that even Rush Limbaugh would love!

I'm getting rather sick of the "isn't it great that an African team are through to the quartefinals" line. There wouldn't have been a hint of that if England had ended up playing Ghana.

Post-colonialist self-congratulatory back-patting.

Edit: not to play the "I have a black friend, so..." card, but, I have a black friend, who was born and raised in Slough, now lives in the US, and was all about Ghana beating the American team. An amusing intersection of identities if I ever saw one.

Oh! There's also my friend Esther, who is Korean, born in the Guatemala (where her family still lives), speaks fluent Spanish, Korean, and English, educated in the US, and roots for Portugal.

Well at least Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay are still alive.

Through process of elimination, I'm now going for the Netherlands.

[edit] Which will probably mean they lose next, the way I'm going.

Ever since the USA lost, Germany's been my team. Currently, 3-0 them against Argentina!

My bitterness over Germany beating England having subsided, I hope they do well, and maybe win. They play exciting football, score goals, and are a nice team to watch from a neutral standpoint. Schweinsteiger has been fantastic in the last two games.

But I think Netherlands will win. Uruguay are defensively vulnerable, David Villa can only carry Spain so far.

I'm kind of hoping Holland win, myself - if largely because they are Germany's rival, and Germany has already won Eurovision this year,, and I don;t think one country should win two of the most important international competitions of this year

Well, seeing how Felix has already jinxed most of Latin America... :P

My family were Spaniards, so I'll have to go with Spain.
