We've been waiting for The Big One in Illinois for a century or so.

I still remember doing "earthquake drills" in middle school because some crank decided that The Big One was coming.  Of course, nobody thought his cutesy numerology was bogus.  One of those 12:34:56 July 8th, 1990 type deals. :dumbass:

Apparently, when I was in college at Iowa, there was an earthquake centered in Missouri that some people in Iowa felt.

I had friends who told me that they felt the earthquake. Me? I slept through it ...

Apparently the Ohio River Valley has a fault system as well. however most of the quakes barely register at about 1.something. The most powerful quake I was involved with was at college in Grayson Ky. Some picture frames shook for about 2 seconds.

I've heard there was something like a quake here 40 years ago or so, but it was only for about a minute. I'm not particularly worried about that in the future.

I went to Japan last year for the first time, basically a life's dream come true, and fell in love with the country and its people. I'm deeply saddened by what's happened there.

And now there's a risk of a nuclear disaster on top of the natural one. I've been glued to BBC coverage since yesterday morning.

I have a friend who fell so much in love with Japan during a mission trip that he's now moved back there and started a family. But he says he's hundreds of miles away from the affected areas, and is still posting regularly to facebook, so thankfully I need not worry about him too much.

Is it just me or does there seem to be more large scale earthquakes these days. Christchurch, NZ has had two major ones in the last 6 months, then the one in Haiti, a large one in southern CA, and this one. Maybe its just me, or maybe earthquake is just the buzz word that the media is hitting on these days, I just don't remember there being this many large scale ones this close together.

From what I understand, the area affected was not heavily populated. Not to devalue what has happened, and I hope they have a speedy recovery, but this could have been much much worse.

Don't forget the 8.8 Monster quake that hit Chile last year.

Yeah tbh no part of Japan is sparsely populated, even rural areas are patchworks of partial settlement interspersed with farmland. It's an incredibly densely populated country. We don't really have full figures yet on the death tole, there's like 10,000 missing in one town alone.

That is true, but could you imagine the impact this would have had on a place like Tokyo? From the USGO site on earthquake data in the western Pacific, they have has an unheard of number of aftershocks a few of which have been M6.0's. I hope they don't have another flare up anytime soon. The impact would be absolutely devastating.

From what I am reading, a meltdown is eminent on three reactors. Unit 3 would be the first to go since 90% of its core has been exposed. What has me worried is the ability to contain the explosion. They are saying the outer containment shell is still in tact but I wonder if its integrity has been compromised. I sincerely hope that we don't have to get to the point of worrying about that.

So far the more reasoned comparisons have been with Three Mile Island not Chernobyl... let's hope this remains so.

EDIT: how bizarre to see my old uni with ads on this website (Leicester Exchanges). Well, good on 'em, I guess.

Considering Three Mile Island's death toll, we can only hope.

Am I the only who (cynically enough) is reminded of Mr. Burns' commendation of Homer for averting a nuclear accident?: "Your bravery and quick thinking have turned a potential Chernobyl into a mere Three Mile Island. Bravo!"

Yeah, good for them, but most of us wouldn't see them. More likely they're local ads.

It would seem this is becoming more and more like Three Mile Island everyday. I'm not convinced as of yet that restoring power to the pumps will do any good since every other system has been taken out of service, and apparently they were hit with another earthquake closer inland this morning. They've also released a statement saying the spent fuel pool at Unit 4 has a sizable tear in the lining which means the heavy water in it is leaking out into something. I honestly think they are trying to downplay the situation and firmly believe they don't have sufficient control over the problem. They need to extend the evacuation zone before they loose what little bit of control they have.
