I ran a train today. Well not actually drive it but I did get to fire it some in the yard. Something I'm not gonna forget for a while.

It pays to volunteer with a non-profit railroad. This is only stuff I've dreamed about doing since I was 5. It was a nice 4th to say the least though.

Good lord, Zarqs, I use to do something similar myself. I was a volunteer on a steam railway over here in blighty. Admittedly, only a porter (I'm not really mechanically minded enough to be let loose with steam loco's), but got to ride the light engine a few times

That's basically what we have, and 0-4-0 tank engine, IT's NOT THOMAS DAMNIT!

Anyway, I've loved those things since I was 5 and wanted to drive one. Then when I got into my teens I figured I'd never have the chance and took up reenacting. Well last year I stumbled onto a group just down the road from me that has one and I've been a walking boner ever since. Sorry ladies, it's a guy thing.

EDIT: Here's a link of us running yesterday, you can see me throwing the switch about halfway through. The weird hand motions were to the signal man asking if he throw the switch back.

Should have clarified, in UK railway parlance a light engine is any loco running without carriages. The one's I've travelled on have ranged for 0-6-0's to a 2-10-0 ;)

That's great! I loved watching that. Union Pacific runs their No. 844 through here once or twice a year and I always go down to watch it. Got to watch it pass at full speed once. Awesome.

UP's Challengers are really awesome engines, 844 broke a flu recently and I'm not sure when it will be running again. Honestly, I've never had the chance to see a full size engine run, but I'm hoping to get the chance to soon.

Cob, consider yourself lucky to live in a nation that loves its steam. It's hard to find anything with a boiler on it here.

Awesome video, ZF. My little nephews would gotten a kick out of seeing that thing chugging down the track.

Anyway, I found this clip extremely relevant (given that 1/4 of Americans don't even know whom we declared independence from):

[/doHTML]

Here's hoping you all enjoyed a knowledgeable Independence Day weekend!
