I hear there's this special thing you have to recite:

On this auspicious occasion
This special family dinner
If I argue with a loved one, Lord
Please make me... the winner

(pinched from Loudon Wainwright III)

Whatever, I hope you all enjoy it, and may you be as together as you can bear to be. :P

I've come to the conclusion that people who shop on Black Friday should not be allowed to breed.

However, in honor of surviving another Black Friday, I've bought 2 very large cans of Fosters, and am going to drink them shortly. :captspauld:

All of the outrage over stores opening early this year fell on deaf ears for me. I work in a restaurant open every day of the year except Christmas day. I've always had to work thanksgiving- but did you hear anyone complain about us? No, it's the poor retail workers who DON'T have to serve turkey and potatoes to a whiny twenty-top of distant relatives who MAYBE will leave 15% despite the place being packed and nearly eighty other servers running around trying to get people what they need.

Happy fucking Thanksgiving, assholes.

I'm not denying that it sucks for wait staff, but to provide a little perspective about why everyone talks about the retail workers:

My wife works at Walmart. This is the first year she hasn't had to show up for work at 4am on black Friday. The first time she had to show up that early, she made the mistake of leaving the normal amount of travel time and was almost late as she had to circle the lot half a dozen times to find a parking spot. Think about how large a Super Walmart's parking lot is. She had to park in a nearby restaurant's parking lot and walk.

To say nothing of how getting up 4 hours early totally fucks with you.

Of course, the whole thing's insane. Now it's Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday.

Here's my Thanksgiving holiday video offering - WKRP in Cincinnati's "Turkey Away." (or, as I affectionately refer to it: the Turkey Drop episode)

Pretty hilarious. Admittedly, the first few minutes aren't as good as the end, but the end is just .... amazing, I think. :D

Otherwise, I worked last night at my pharmacy, and we weren't nearly as busy as I expected for being Black Friday. But, hey, that works for me. I was able to get plenty of cleaning/organizational stuff done, so that was awesome.

I didn't partake in any Black Friday shopping - it take a crazy person to brave those crowds, I think. However, I'm sure that the rest of you have (perhaps?) heard of the pepper spraying Wal-Mart shopper already?

Happy Thanksgiving to all of my fellow Americans on the board. And I hope all of the non-Americans have a wonderful rest of your weekend, at least. :)

Anyway Happy Winter Solstice Everyone! Would you believe that it is 56 degrees F (13 Celcuis) on Lovely Long Island, New York, USA? We are having a heat wave. It will snow over the weekend to the north of us, but not here.

Got snow for the first time here in Wisconsin a few days ago, and more of it today. And, of course, joy of joys, I'm working until 6 tomorrow and again at 8am on the 26th, which gives me next to no time to go home and relax with the family for the holidays.

Needless to say, I'm stocking up on alcohol. Chai tea with amaretto + vanilla vodka? Yes, please. Hot cocoa with peppermint schnapps? Absolutely! A good half-dozen bottles of wine? Why the hell not!

It's looking like an alcoholic Christmas in these parts ......

Hopefully you all have a wonderful Christmas (if you celebrate) or at least a happy Boxing Day and/or New Year and/or Festivus and/or .... whatchamacallit. :)

Feliz navidad.

Mine was well enough I suppose, though I was forced to sit through Home Alone for like the 80,000th time followed by an awful colorized version of Miracle on 34th Street (a movie I usually enjoy, when Maureen O'Hara's face does not look like a Jack-o-lantern). But I was sure to squeeze in the Festivus episode of Seinfeld as well, because Christmas in our family is never complete without it. Then of course there was the pumpkin pie; I can miss everything else and still be happy with that. :D

How's about the rest of youse?

We had a good Christmas. Watched "A Christmas Story", ate turkey and brisket. My Mom made a caramel-pecan cheesecake that was so good you probably couldn't eat it while standing. :D

Mine went by without notice. Everyone is so bad off money wise in my family that we barely had enough to have any food at all.

My son was up from Canberra and kept taking me aside and asking if there were any family names ... "You had an Uncle Hector"/"No, I don't think Sarah would like that." "There was old Auntie Agnes..."/"Agnes!!!OMG!!! There was really a real person called Agnes?" (I don't know why that's so funny).

He also asked me would I like to be called Nanny or Granny, or would I prefer to be called Granma, just on the offchance that he and his wife might, in some indeterminate future, procreate, though of course not yet.

I think he's hinting at something. That was a pretty good Christmas gift.
