History

  • 1802 AD: The Sanzali Republics is formed.
  • 1961 AD: Yuri Gagarin becomes the first human in space.
  • 1969 AD: Neil Armstrong becomes the first human to walk on Earth's moon.
  • 1998 AD: Construction of the International Space Station begins in Earth orbit.
  • 2084 AD: Sparked by conflict over dwindling resources, overpopulation and various other problems, small conflicts and skirmishes quickly spiral out of control into the Third World War on Earth. The apocalyptic struggle is fought between the United States and its European allies, and the People's Republic of China and their North Korean allies. The Russian Federation remains officially neutral, but sells arms to China and North Korea. The global conflict rages for four brutal years, devastating numerous regions around the world. Two billion people are confirmed dead by war's end.
  • 2088 AD: Reconstruction of the areas affected by WWIII begins. Surviving nations pool together resources under a strengthened United Nations, which oversees resource and food distribution.
  • 2112 AD: The first successful fusion reactor is designed and built on Earth. Mining facilities begin to pop on Earth's moon and in orbit of Uranus to collect HE-3.
  • 2120 AD: Colonization of Luna and Mars begins. Orbital telescopes discover a garden world in the Alpha Centuari System.
  • 2150 AD: The first fusion reactor powered colony ships leave Earth for the Alpha Centauri System. Colonization of the outer Sol System begins.
  • 2162 AD: The world is changed forever as faster than light travel is invented, debunking Einstein's theory that such a feat was impossible.
  • 2206 AD: Alien artifacts are discovered on a planet colonized by the European Federation. The leading nations of Earth agree to rally under the single banner of the United Nations in order to defend humanity in the event of first contact with hostile aliens. The United Nations of Earth is formed.
  • 2262 AD: Two decades of radical secessionist movements in the outer Sol System lead to the One Year War as the colonies beyond the asteroid belt declare their independence from Earth. The UNE emerges victorious, ceasing all talk of secession in the colonies.
  • 2370: the United Earth Confederation is founded.
  • 2508 AD: First contact with the Nikahae Empire is made in the Sanctuary System. After several failed diplomatic probes are sent by UEC officials, the Nikahae invade UEC space, setting off the Human-Nikahae War.
  • 2508-2552 AD: The Human-Nikahae War rages, resulting in a stalemate and the signing of an armistice. By war's end, 18 billion humans are dead, along with countless Nikahae. An official peace treaty is never signed.
    - 2514: Several human star systems, dissatisfied with how Earth is running the war against the Nikahae, secede from the UEC. The Confederation Defense Force, falling back on all fronts, is powerless to stop them. The Independent Systems Coalition is founded.
  • 2554 AD: A wave of underground xenophobic literature, including Attack of the Fluffmunigans, is published. Such publications are frowned upon in Earth space, but they find a dedicated audience in the Coalition.
  • 2562 AD: First contact between humans and the sanzali is made. The sanzali, who are also the enemies of the Nikahae Empire, agree to a mutual defense treaty with the UEC. Worried over the new alliance between their two greatest enemies, the Nikahae Empire begins to build up its navy.
  • 2563 AD: Appalled by human cooperation with aliens, and still full of anger over the Human-Nikahae War, several xenophobic star systems leave the UEC and join the ISC.
  • 2600 AD: The UEC and Sanzali Republics merge to create the Interstellar Alliance. Both parties agree to the capital being on Earth. Humanity gets a huge boost in both technological and economic sectors, transforming them from a second-rate civilization into a galactic power. The total number of star systems controlled from Earth raises to nearly two hundred.
  • 2622 AD: After rebuilding its armed forces, the ISA embarks on the unsuccessful Operation Unity, the failed recapture of ISC star systems. Alliance intelligence sources underestimated the strength of ISC naval forces, and the offensive is halted after only a few systems are taken. The Alliance forces withdraw, and a bitter cold war begins between the ISA and ISC.
  • 2623 AD: The first sanzali President of the Alliance is elected.
  • 2700 AD: During the celebration of the 100th birthday of the ISA, the Nikahae Empire launches an offensive into ISA space. The Alliance Navy swiftly reacts, and Nikahae forces are defeated in less than a year. The galaxy witnesses the might of the post-Operation Unity Alliance Navy.
  • 2704 AD: Operation Beehive: the destruction of a nikahae hive established in Alliance space

Government

The Executive

The Interstellar Alliance is run, first and foremost, by the Office of the Prime Minister. Said office does not denote the actual working environment but instead the people and departments designated as those responsible for running the Alliance. Primarily this includes the Prime Minister himself and his Council of Ministers which includes the Ministers of State, Foreign Affairs, Justice, Environment, Finance and Defence.

The cabinet meets bi-weekly to discuss anything of importance, with the Prime Minister in attendance at least once a month. In times of emergency the cabinet can be called to meet via hologram, though such instances are rare due to the potential for hacking or outside interference. The Prime Minister is not superior in the sense that he can ignore the other branches of government, however; a series of checks and balances ensure that the executive body is answerable and can be monitored by the legislature and the judiciary, much as they can be monitored and are answerable to the executive. Any member of the cabinet can be brought before the legislature to answer questions should the legislature vote for such a measure, and it is possible for them to remove a minister from their position by a two-thirds majority vote.

The Parliament

The legislature of the Interstellar Alliance is a complex limb of the government. Responsible for the proposal and passing of bills and new articles of legislation, the Alliance consists of two representatives from every member planet and celestial body, all of whom represent one of the various political parties in the Alliance. The exception to this rule is Earth, which provides one representative per nation state, those being the United North American States, the European Union, the Russian Federation and the Chinese People's Federation. These individuals - known as Members of Parliament or, formerly, the "Honorable Member of Parliament for the planet ..." - meet at least once a month on Earth, but can be called together by the Parliamentary Speaker in emergency situations, identified as times of war, immediate danger to the Alliance as a whole, the death of the cabinet and so forth. The parliament is powerful in that it can hold the executive and judicial branches to account for their actions, but it is also the slowest moving of the three branches because here is where most of the political battles are fought.

The Judiciary

The judiciary of the Alliance is the least political of the three branches, instead focused on the enforcement of law. There are three types of courts. The Supreme Court is the highest court in the Alliance and deals only with the most severe of cases; high treason, attempted murder of the cabinet, war crimes such as genocide and so forth are brought before this court. It consists of twelve justices and a head justice, continuing with slight modifications the style of the Supreme Court of the United States. Below this court are the Planetary Courts; they deal with major issues on individual planets within the Alliance that are important, but not so important as to be taken to the Supreme Court. Below them are the regional courts; smaller courts on different regions of a planet to deal with minor to moderately important cases.

Other Departments

Colonial Affairs Administration

The Colonial Affairs Administration was established as one of the highest authorities in the Alliance when it comes to matters pertaining to Alliance colonies across the galaxy. Their duty is to catalog colonies, plan for the creation of new colonies and to ensure that said colonies are capable of prospering economically without continual financial support from the central planets in the Alliance. Many consider the CAA to be one of the main reasons the Alliance is capable of expanding and prospering as quickly as it has.

Alliance Geological Service

As the human race expands its territory and raises the general standard of living, demand for industrial resources continues to grow. Many planets, moons, and asteroids contain a wealth of resources, but many systems have been barely charted, let alone thoroughly surveyed. Unmanned probes are one solution, but they are often lost to space hazards, unforeseen circumstances, or theft by salvagers.

In recent years, AGS, the Alliance Geological Service, has offered bounties to private individuals or teams willing to perform mineralogical surveys on the frontier. This survey data is made publicly available to further corporate development. Due to the cost of travel and the dangers of operating on hostile worlds, it is rarely a profitable endeavor.

The Intelligence Service

The Interstellar Alliance Intelligence Service, whilst a civilian agency, is usually found under military organization listings within the Alliance for the purposes of keeping things simple. Their duty is to gather information for use by the Alliance, engage in counter espionage and cyber warfare with the enemy and enact covert operations.

The Intelligence Service is headed by a director and monitored by the Intelligence Committee. The Intelligence Service has been the source of controversy in parliament with many feeling that the civilian agency has too little oversight, but it has served its purpose well and as such no action has been taken.

Economy

The Alliance has quickly become a key player in the galactic economy, with several large human corporations taking their market share. The Alliance is known to have dealings and contracts with some of the galaxies biggest corporations. There are countless hundreds, if not thousands of companies that work day and night to churn over a profit within Alliance space, of which the government takes a slice in return for the right to market products within their space. This money helps to keep the Alliance afloat and promote growth within the market.

Military

The Alliance military, comprised of the Navy, Marines, Army and Sanzali Guard, is regarded as a "sleeping giant," as less than 10% of humans volunteer to serve in their military, a lower proportion than any other species. Their doctrine is not based on absorbing and dishing out heavy shocks. Rather, they bypass enemy strong points and launch deep into their rear, cutting supply lines and destroying headquarters and support units, leaving enemies to "wither on the vine".
On defensive, the human military is a rapid reaction force that lives by Sun Tzu's maxim, "He who tries to defend everything defends nothing." Garrisons are intended for scouting rather than combat, avoiding engagement to observe and report on invaders using drones.
The token garrisons of human colonies make it easy for alien powers to secure them, for which the media criticizes the military. However, the powerful fleets stationed at key systems are just a few hours or days from any colony within their sphere of responsibility. In the event of an attack, they respond with an overwhelming force.

Alliance Navy

The Alliance Navy is a space combat force primarily charged with protecting human colonies. While the Navy stations only token garrisons to guard Alliance colonies, its strength is centered upon powerful fleets stationed in strategic systems that can rapidly respond to any colony under attack. Today fleet numbers surpass a thousand ships following continued colonial expansion. Its individual vessels range considerably in size and firepower, varying from frigates to dreadnoughts. Fleet units are also supported by fighters and dedicated interceptors deployed from cruisers, dreadnoughts, and carriers.
