Hello everyone, and welcome to The Genesis Project. The first thing that we will be talking about is the Project's IRC chat room. For those of you who don't know this, IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. Some basic tips can be found here.

Chats take place in "chatrooms," where groups of people can talk to each other about various topics. Each person in the chatroom has client software which enables them to be in the chatroom, which is hosted on a server. Messages go from the client software of the person making them, to the server, and from there, to the client software of all the other people in the chatroom. This can be likened to instant messenging groups of people at the same time.

One example of client software is this simple chat client from Espernet. As you can see, each person in the chatroom has a username, which is what they are known by in the chat. People can change their usernames during the chat, but beginners should typically stick with their username until they are more comfortable with how IRC works.

In order to say something in the Espernet program (after you've made it to the desired chatroom), you would type what you want to say in the bar at the bottom, and then hit the "enter" key. Your text should then show up in the bigger part of that chatroom window, where you can see what everyone in the chatroom is saying. Espernet also has a handy feature called "PM," which allows you to talk privately to a user in a given chatroom. In Espernet, you need to click on the username of the person which you wish to talk to (in the list of usernames on the right sidebar), then click PM. You should then be able to talk to that person privately.

When you click the link for Espernet, you'll also see that Espernet allows you to select which chat room that you wish to start with. Please note that all chatrooms start with the pound key (#). Thus, the chatroom for The Genesis Project would be #TGP . All you need is the poundkey, then the name of the chatroom which you wish to join, so that you can input it in the proper location. When you are already in a chatroom, you can always join another one by using the command: /join #<insert chatroom name here>. You would place the name of the chatroom in the space where the "<insert chatroom name here>" is, and you will not need the greater than or lesser than signs. For example, you can join The Genesis Project's chatroom by typing: /join #TGP

There are various other commands, most of which might confuse a beginner to IRC until they get better used to how the program works. One of these is /me, which allows you to say something in the third person, as well as giving it greater emphasis. A list of basic IRC commands can be located here.

One thing that we want to stress for those who have joined The Genesis Project is communication. With the Mods/Mentors, and with everyone else. This project cannot work without communication. Do you have questions or comments? Communicate them to people! Do you have problems with any of the participants or mods/mentors in this project? Let us know! As long as you are polite to each other, and realize that we are all here to help each other have a good RPing experience, then we should be able to get through all of the stuff required to help all of you to be better RPers. The whole point of the project is to help you to acquire the skills needed to not only have a good time on NS, but to be a better RPer, and help others along the line as well. Without communication, that just isn't going to happen.

So if you need help with IRC, or have any suggestions, please let us know. I hope that this very basic look into IRC helps, as it is just one of the communications tools that we'll be using throughout the project. Thank you.

I would strongly stress that anybody not familiar with IRC become so; it's the lifeblood of a lot of communities, especially those in II.

Well I recommend you perhaps add how to use clients or said websites to direct IRC chatrooms. Without it, talking about IRC is not going to be as helpful, because there is no cue as to how to get on an IRC in the first place.

https://www.esper.net/index.php This is Espernet.

There are various other clients which will help you log into Espernet including Mibbit, Icechat, Trillian, and MIRC.

client00.chat.mibbit.com/?channel=%23TGP&server=irc.esper.net The Genesis Project

This is a Mibbit shortcut: to The Genesis Project.

I apologize for the links being the same color as normal text, i've sent a message to Swith (who created the board's skin for us), and hopefully that issue will be rectified before long).

EDIT: Problem solved.

Success. B-) When Tiami is finished with another guide, we'll be able to start with Assignment #2.
