Assignment #3: Alliances!

O-ho, this is going to be an interesting one.

Using your knowledge of IRC and the information you acquired from the previous assignment, you are now tasked with trying to make an alliance. Your goal is to get in contact with other region members as well as International Incidents on a whole, and get an alliance up and running!

The alliance needs to clearly state its purpose, its goals, and if you choose to do so, any stipulations or rules.

Your goal is to be in an alliance or start an alliance that has two or more members of Auxilium, and two or more members outside of Auxilium.

The alliance with the most members OUTSIDE of Auxilium will be the forefront for Part 1 of Assignment 4's RP, whereas the alliance with the most members WITHIN Auxilium will be the forefront for Part 2.

You are free to discuss this outside the forums. There is no due date as of yet. Best of luck!

Milo and Jen, can you give us an example of what an alliance between NS nations looks like on paper? I've never done one or been in one.

My understanding of them is just the basic definition: An alliance is a pact, coalition or friendship between two or more parties, made in order to advance common goals and to secure common interests. It is a Political agreement between countries to support each other in disputes with other countries.

I think ANZUS or NATO when I hear the word. Are you looking for something like the KORUS FTA?

I wouldn't mind helping start an alliance with any PMT/FT nations in Auxilium but I... um... don't know where or how to start.

I know that this is technically an "assignment" and not a lecture of sorts, though I have some questions that I thought of when reading the assignment and I'd be interested in any of the teacher's responses. If the "Assignment" post is not the place to ask these questions, then I apologize.

In RL, I'm interested in the realm of Foreign Affairs and international organizations including intergovernmental organizations like the UN and Commonwealth of Nations, economic and political unions like the EU, military alliances like NATO, and those less heard of continent-based unions, such as USAN and AU. Because of this, I center my Roleplaying, and RL perspective, towards peace and negotiations, and I'm not a big "all-out war" type of RPer.

A big thing I've seen with NS Alliances is threads come and go. I use this expression loosely, because I've only been in NS for a year. I haven't seen many alliances stay alive and active, or come close to reaching their true potential. Most fall short, due to inactivity and just another application thread. This made me wonder, what is the point of these alliances?

My perspective is to use these in terms of RPing; but then you see some have articles in their Charter similar to Article 5 of the Washington Treaty (NATO), but do they really follow these? They seem to me that they are just there to be there. No point if it doesn't do anything.

So this led to the question: Regional or Open Alliances? What is the best for a RP-oriented nations/players and how should they go about creating one/joining one? Could it bride-the-gap to be considered a regional government as well and or span the all mighty-line of IC v. OOC? What is too much bureaucracy and what is to little? Also, which would be better...military, economic, intergovernmental, or geographical, and which would you prefer admission in personally?

You'll probably find throughout this project, I'll be asking a lot of questions, which is both good and bad. I'm sure some of you have already realized ;^). I'm not quizzing you or anything like that. Don't feel obligated to answer the said questions above, though I want to learn how to more effectively incorporate Alliances into my RPing, starting with how to form them. Thanks in advance for the help.

I'll hopefully be able to make IRC over the weekend, or else TG me if you are interested in forming something.

I am a semi-monarchist state. Monarchy that is actually a full dictatorship, so I’m in.

It depends. Off the top of my head, some good examples of II alliances are Brimstone, ODECON, and the (ongoing) E10.

It's probably best to maintain an MT / PMT presence at the moment, since the next RP would require technology timeline convergence to some degree.

Hmmm.
5. To establish a Free Nations Court of Beings Rights to create a Declaration of the rights of Sentient Species, and to define which species come under this definition, and to enforce said Declaration.
- We'd rather other nations didn't tell us which of our sentient species is sapient enough to have rights. Sentience is consciousness: the ability to understand signals, interpret them, learn them, and use them. Sapience is the ability to think abstractly about the world, to search for meaning instead of purpose. Not all people define it as such but, since we are an odd group to begin with, we prefer to break the two categories down in this fashion.

Jen, we appear on the surface as PMT if only because it's just been a challenge to play in II as FT when so many functions only accept MT/PMT nations.

Being new to this aspect of II... I can safely say that something of that magnitude both interests me and terrifies me. :P Teach me how to fashion something like this, wise ones!
