Are single-sex schools more effective at instilling an education than co-ed schools?
The general public is generally more favorable to co-ed schools. A recent idebate survey has shown that before looking at the information, 66% percent of the readers were already against single-sex schools, including 40% which were strongly against. However, there are several arguments for the benefits of single-sex schools as well. This article will delve deeper into both sides of the argument.
Firstly, single-sex schools cultivate a wider spectrum of personalities within the same gender, as students in single-sex schools are constrained far less by the ‘norms’ of society. There are no longer any members of the opposite gender to impress, and so students are able to develop without worry. One of the studies showing this was written by George Orwell, the famous political writer, as he had taught in a boys’ school and wanted to look deeper into the idea.

However, in response to this, it could be said that this could lead to these students not finding a partner in later life, as their personalities are not of the norm. This could also lead to trouble in workplaces. This may be true, but many up-and-coming industries such as the computer industry don’t need much communication face-to-face anymore. Furthermore, many workplaces are simply made of small cubicles which reduce face-to-face contact. And marriage is not something key to life, and you save money from getting gifts and supporting the other person (and possibly a child or two later) if you stay single.

This however brings up the point of sociality. In single-sex schools you are only communicating with the same gender. Many claim that sociality is just as important as education in school. Sociality could potentially be the key in getting a job which is also contested by an individual who has the same skills as you have, but isn’t as social.
It could be said that it isn’t a quantum leap to start communicating between genders, which is very true as in the end we are all the same species anyway. And single-sex universities don’t exist, allowing a few years of communication before entering the real world.
This relates to another point- those of the other gender could cause distractions in class, especially if you communicate with them often. In the later years of school life students start to develop feelings for someone of the opposite gender, leading to reduced concentration and distractions. Also, sexism is also an issue, which can reduce self-esteem.

One could choose to ignore sexist peers- however, this is not easy as you can’t just ‘block’ them like in social media, as they could continue harassing you. Repeated harassment can lead to acceptance, once again reducing self-esteem, something very important.

From these points, single-sex schools seem to have more advantages than disadvantages. Most of the disadvantages are easily worked around, but the advantages are very solid. Therefore, all in all, I am for single-sex schools. The majority isn’t always right.

BTW, nice avatar.
