I have always this to be interesting and a bit funny.

Buddhist monks will keep their heads shaven because they feel that growing hair and admiring it is a narcissistic quality and that God wants us to be selfless. Sikhs will never cut their hair because they feel it is natural and that it is that natural state that God would want.

I just find it fascinating that both of these actions are totally opposite and yet are both trying to accomplish the same thing.

I can understand the reasoning behind each approach, but it's interesting that similar people from the same part of the world can take such different roads, as you say.

Often you find the reason for cultural practices can be traced back to practicality (e.g. kosher foods tend to be those that don't keep well in the desert, dates of religious holidays such as Christmas fall in line with dates of older holidays). Or sometimes it's because it allowed them to assert their identity in a way against those who were their oppressors or just the majority at the time.

Whilst they may be from the same part of the world, Buddhism was founded in the 6th century BC, whilst Sikhism in the 15th century AD, over 2000 years later, so the cultural practices are bound to reflect the times they grew from.

I see what you're saying, but I'm not sure if this would have anything to do with that :P

So in the 15th century India they liked having long hair and 2000 years earlier not so much? :P

And let's not forget saying 'India' is like saying 'Europe' or 'America', it's a huge country with a very varied landscape and a wide mixture of communities. You could say it's like comparing Alexandrian Greece to Tudor England.

I get it. Even the small Greece was varied and divided.
