Kinda, I got a list of movies I want to watch. Lawrence of Arabia and this one were both on the list. I also want to watch: Citizen Kane And I'm not sure what else yet.... Lawrence and Cuckoos were the other big ones. Not really in the mood for Citizen Kane atm. I also started to watch Metropolis and then thought that this was too old even for me

Citizen Kane is an incredible film, as is Metropolis. And there's no such thing as too old! I was watching Mernau's Nosferatu the other day and it was terrifying, and there's still nothing funnier than Chaplin or Keaton. |

You should definitely watch both Metropolis and The Great Dictator, two great movies with The Great Dictator Movies being somewhere on my top 10. I had the fortune to have been introduced to them by one of my teachers in class during my secondary school years. You should also watch some of Akira Kurosawa's classic works like Seven Samurai and Rashomon which I really enjoyed. If you're into Ryan Gosling you should also watch Drive and The Place Behind the Pines.

Kurosawa's films are great. They contain a lot of material that is very much unique to Japan, but the overall content is accessible to pretty much everyone (although, I watched them in Japanese class, so I suppose I'm not a very good judge of that). One of them, Yojimbo, was remade (sort of) as A Fistful of Dollars, which I'll use as a segue to suggest seeing the Dollars Trilogy if you haven't already. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is one of my favorite movies. |

I've seen Chinatown, Apocalypse Now, and Metropolis. I didn't like Chinatown very much. Apocalypse Now is due for a re-watching. I've only seen it once 10 years ago, and I fell asleep for about half of the movie (because of exhaustion, not because the movie was boring). With Metropolis, it depends on which cut you get your hands on. There are several restorations of the film, and until recently all of them differed substantially from Fritz Lang's original. I watched the Netflix version. I had a hard time evaluating the movie, primarily because of how old it is, and therefore how alien the style seems to me. My favuorite films of all time are: Modern Times Dr Strangelove Harvey 2001: A Space Odyssey Star Wars The Godfather Duck Soup Sunset Boulevard Sherlock Jr Withnail and I And also special mentions (11 and 12) for It's a Wonderful Life and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (in fact for the whole trilogy). I'd also have to have Rashomon and Seventh Seal up there. @ Brann Triune - Yes! Kurosawa is the master. And I love Sergio Leone films, they give me a little tingle when I think of them! I love the music, and the faces! Just amazing faces held in shots that go on way too long so you watch each drop of sweat, it's fantastic. @ Rach - Dr Strangelove was my favourite film for many, many years (until I saw Modern Times and fell in love with it). It's an amazing film. And on the Seven Samurai discussion, Rashomon was also remade as a Western, with Paul Newman playing a Mexican bandit (sounds odd I know), and it's actually a pretty good film! Kurosawa was influenced by Westerns and one of his motivations for making Seven Samurai was to transport the cowboy tropes into the samurai genre. Kurosawa was very critical of the honour system in Japanese culture and he saw the Western anti-hero as a way of attacking the traditions of honour-bound samurais. After WWII, when there had been so much devastation in Japan, he became more popular as more people began to agree with his views. |

Wow, that makes me really want to watch Seven Samurais It's pretty funny that he based his stories on Western ideals which were then retold from a Western perspective. |
