So the minority Bloc Quebecois provincial government in Quebec decided to hold snap elections because they felt they could win an outright majority. Yet, Pauline Marois, the first female premier of Quebec has instead led her party to a stunning defeat that saw them routed. The reasons? Firstly, they started to bring up sovereignty from Canada again and brought in a media mogul who is very gung ho about the whole issue. However, Quebec has little appetite in that currently. Secondly the Bloc said they would ban all employees of the government from wearing overt religious symbols. They also admitted they would fire any employee of the government who contravened this. Lastly, the Quebec Liberal Party wasn't as hurt by scandals in the past as the Bloc had hoped. All in all the Liberals gained 21 seats to win an outright majority with 70 seats (63 is needed for a majority) while the Bloc lost 24 seats and fell to 30 seats. The leader of the Bloc herself, Pauline Marois was unable to hold on to her own seat and resigned promptly after their defeat. Is this the end of the sovereignty movement for Quebec finally?

Those wacky Quebecois Also I don't think this is the end of sovereignty movement. I doubt they will ever gain enough support to achieve their goals, but they will still be a large enough minority that to be relevant in provincial politics, for the the foreseeable future. |

Interesting how she misread the atmosphere so much. Sounds like a pretty sound defeat, that. |
