This April marks the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan Genocide. For those who don't know what it is, it was the systematic killing of the minority tutsi tribe and moderate hutus by the extremist members of the majority hutus. These "tribes" were actually invented by the Belgians when they colonized Rwanda in order to better manage the country. The tutsis were those the Belgian put in charge of the country and this bred resentment from the hutus over time. April 6th, the Hutu Rwandan President Habyarimana is assassinated when his aircraft is shot down. A collection of Hutu groups, from parts of the army to militias then enacted a plan to kill all the tutsis in the country. They blamed the Tutsis for shooting down the airplane although subsequent investigations make it seem far more likely that it was the Hutus themselves. Prior to this, they had been gathering weapons and spreading hate via radio calling tutsis cockroaches and advocating for their destruction. Sadly, the U.N. mission at the time led by Canadian Romeo Dallaire warned the world of what he felt was a genocide... but the world ignored him. Either not believing him or not willing to go into another "African mess" like Somalia. Somewhere between 500,000 and 1,200,000 people were killed in 100 days (70% of the tutsi population). That is faster than people were exterminated by the Nazis. By the rwandan government accounts, they claim 1,174,000 people were killed in 100 days. That is 10,000 per day. 400 every hour and 7 every minute. Most of these were killed by machetes. Hutus were butchering their neighbours like animals. The economist says they would kill the children slowly in front of the parents and then kill the parents quickly (they go in more graphic detail). The genocide ended, when the Rwandan Patriotic Front defeated the hutu led national army and took control under Paul Kagame. The genocide was likely the greatest crime against humanity committed since World War II. It was a huge failure on the part of Western Countries as well as the UN to recognize and act upon peoples warnings of the impeding disaster. Since the genocide, Rwanda has been able to rebuild. In fact, corruption in the country is low and the GDP has been growing on average at 8% per year for a while. Although Paul Kagames government is very authoritarian (but elected) and these numbers are boosted by foreign aid to the small country. It has been hard for countries to criticize Rwanda after allowing the genocide to happen. The Rwandan genocide showed the worst in humanity. It was led by people who had been educated in very well regarded countries. Romeo Dallaire wrote a great book called "Shake hands with the devil" based on his experiences in Rwanda. The book is titled as thus because he had shaken hands with some of the perpetrators of the genocide. How do people become so dehumanized and cruel that they are willing to slaughter their neighbours over what are essentially arbitrary groupings? It's one of those things that should bother you. I know for me personally, I find it very troubling and upsetting. Events such as the Rwandan genocide should never ever happen. Yeah, the most horrifying part is how most of the world did nothing. I can't believe it's been 20 years already. Why more people don't bring this up against Bill Clinton boggles my mind. I'd venture to guess if you asked what the worst thing he did in office was, you'd get more about Monica Lewinsky. |

100% with Sev on this. This was a disgrace. The United Nations soldiers in the nation were not allowed to shoot or do anything to prevent people from being murdered (in reality). The fact that they allowed the Prime Minister and her husband to be murdered and then they themselves were killed show's how weakened they were by the restrictions placed upon them by other nations. The soldiers involved in the protection of the PM were later found castrated and with their testicles inside their mouths. The Belgian Government of which Rwanda had been a colony came flying into the nation and removed all of the white Europeans and abandoned everyone else. I honestly do not know how these people sleep at night?? It makes me so sick. |

Yeah and Belgium removed all of it's peacekeepers, which constituted the majority of the force after the Hutus killed a few of them because they knew the Belgians would retreat. |
