Has anyone seen the 1972 film Solaris? It's apparently quite good although it might be difficult to make an essay on it relating to Russian history according to my professor.

Watched it once, but found it too slow for my taste.
I don't remember it being very Russian-specific, so probably you couldn't do an history essay about it, no. :P

If you're looking for science fiction, maybe Aelita could work?
It's usually cited as a sf movie (one of the first) because it's partly set on Mars, but it really is all about escapism after the Civil War.
If you're less picky with the genre there's plenty to choose from, ofc.

Oh I'm not picky at all. I've seen Aelita (it's brilliant and way ahead of its time imo) the only issue is that the film has to be post 1941 this time....

My last essay was on The New Babylon.

There's Andrei Rublev, but I've never watched it - 3+ hours are too intimidating.

White Sun of the Desert is not "artsy", but you may pull something good from it (clash with Islam in Central Asia, exotic portrayal of Turkic peoples).
