Thanks to a recent steam sale I picked up Nobunaga's Ambition: Sphere of Influence. This is the latest in a series of games going all the way back to the 80s. I actually played the first Nobunaga's Ambition several years ago using a NES emulator. But I haven't played any of the games in between. They have made some serious changes to the gameplay throughout the decades, but the basic idea remains the same. Pick a clan and try to unite Japan. Chapter 1: Uniting the Oda I'm not gonna screenshot literally single sentence, but enough to give a you the gist of what's going on which is aided by my own account. Basically, its April 1551. Nobuhide, the leader of the Oda clan, has died and left his son Nobunaga in charge. Nobunaga threw incense at Nobuhide's coffin during the funeral which was considered disrespectful. Here, Masahide is warning Nobunaga to conduct himself better. Masahide is actually one of the few retainers from Nobuhide's court to actually support Nobunaga. Most of the retainers actually support Nobunaga's brother. Nobunaga has earned himself a reputation as the fool of Owari, which has Masahide upset, but Nobunaga embraces the reputation. With the opening scene out of the way its time to play. So here's the situation. The squares with names by them are castles. The red flower is the castle belonging to Nobunaga. The blue flower castles are also part of the Oda clan, but are disloyal. The Green flower is also Oda, and theoretically our ally, but we'll soon see just how reliable they are. To the south with the symbol that looks like a comb is the Imagawa clan, and there's a lot more of them than can be seen in this screenshot. They could be a threat. There are purple squares on the map with no names by them. These are tribes. You can spend money to make them loyal and they will join your side in a nearby battle, but they can't go all over the map like your own armies. If you get them up to 100% loyalty, tribes can be integrated which is a boost to population at a nearby castle, and this is good for long term growth. Next to my castle you can see that I have 3715 soldiers that can be deployed. At the top are various resources. We have money which is used to improve our castles, hire ronin as officers, purchase certain types of resources off the market, and even improving diplomatic relations costs money. The next resource is supplies, which is needed to field an army. When they are sitting around in the castle, armies cost nothing, but when you actually deploy them in the field they will consume supplies. Unlike money which is earned every month, supplies are only produced once a year at the fall harvest, although you can buy some off the market at steep prices if you run low. The next resources are horses and guns, which as far as I know cannot be produced and can only be bought. You can field an army without horses or guns, but if a portion of your army are equipped with these they will fight better. The next resource is innovation. Its based on the tenets of your officers. Some will be progressive which increases innovation and some will be conservative and lower it. As far as I know the only purpose of innovation is determining what policies you can enact, which I'll get to in a bit. Although I am still new to this game so maybe there's more to innovation than I realize. And the final resource is labor, which I believe is tied to the total population. In addition to money you will need labor for all construction projects to improve your castles. This game has quests to try and keep things on historical path. In my first playthrough as the Hojo clan I followed quests for a bit but mixed in my own goals in between. And eventually my own goals conflicted with the quest since I started a war with someone I was supposed to end up allied to. So the later half of that game was just conquering my own way, with no quests to guide me. In this game I think I will try to follow the quests pretty closely if I can, but I might just abandon it if I think there's a better way to conquer Japan. My eye is always on the final objective. In any case, I do think following this quest is a good first step, because we really don't have too many options to expand at our current strength. Our goal is simply to conquer the two blue flower castles, and we have several years to accomplish it, although we won't need it. I enact a policy to recruit more soldiers at the cost of less money earned per month. I think it might be necessary to raise up a larger army in order to win the upcoming battles. Our army moves out to capture Kiyosu castle. We are joined by a loyal tribe. I thought I might need the help of the tribe, but even combining the armies from two castles, the disloyal Oda are no match for us. Pretty soon the enemy army was beaten. It took a couple months to siege down the castle, but it was eventually taken. Meanwhile stuff is going on in other parts of Japan. So there's the Imagawa, which seems to be the strongest clan and the one most likely to unite Japan, but the clan has some problems with its neighbors. Well I cut out some of the discussion, but the gist of it is that the Imagawa, Takeda and Hojo hashed out their differences and formed a triple alliance, something I remember from my play through as the Hojo. In any case, it seems the Imagawa be free to expand in our direction because the have allies on all the other sides. Meanwhile, our forces had captured the other blue Oda castle. There was no army defending it cause it had just died defending the other castle. Castles with less than the full number of soldiers will gradually return to full strength over time, but very little time had passed so there were basically no soldiers available still. We just had to lay siege for a bit and we captured it. Suddenly, the Green Oda clan decides to turn on us. I'm not going to screenshot it, but we get an additional objective in the quest to capture that castle as well. We actually took it pretty easily. There was an army in the castle, but it didn't attempt to fight it just stayed in the castle as we gradually sieged it down. After we take the castle, Nobunaga has a conversation with one of his brother's supporters and decides to spare his life. Katsuie has convinced himself that Nobunaga is not a nutjob but is actually a really smart guy and decides to join him. In any case, uniting the Oda is complete. Next time we'll move on to the next quest. Things are off to an easy start, but I expect it will ramp up in difficult as we go. |

Well, that was a long read, and kinda find the hole "over-political" aspects of it kinda dull (but don't know how the gameplay goes, so it could still be a good game despite that). Also, I always mispronounce Nobunaga as no-bun-ga (as apposed to no-buu-naga)

I will say a dialogue heavy grand strategy game is a bit unusual. I mean Paradox games have little events to give historical flavor, but its nothing compared to what this game has. I don't really mind it, but looking back on the first update, that is a ton of screenshots. Even though I kind of cut out a bit already I can try to keep those scenes even more abridged in the future. |

Chapter 2: Dealing With the Imagawa Our chapter begins with trouble from the Imagawa clan. With his borders secure in every other direction thanks to the triple alliance, Yoshimoto decides to march towards Oda land. I think we all knew this was coming. According to wikipedia, when Nobunaga learned of the impending attack he stated that a defensive war would have ended in defeat because of the enemy's superior numbers. The only way to win would be to go on the offensive. I don't think the game gets this across too clearly. Also, it looks like Nobunaga grew a beard and mustache and found a nice suit of armor since the last chapter. Our objective is to surround the Imagawa castle of Narumi. Not capture, just surround, so we don't actually have to go through a long siege to achieve the objective. It seems the best thing to do here is follow Nobunaga's historical path and quickly go on the offensive. We will rush an army to the castle ASAP and hopefully get there before any large Imagawa forces show up. And we succeed. The Oda army makes it to an undefended Narumi before any Imagawa forces can show up. We also get some intelligence that Yohsimoto himself is in the area. Normally, when hostile units get close to each other on the map, they just plink away at each other until one side is dead or retreats. However when certain conditions are met you can play out these little tactical battles involving all the units in the area. I usually don't bother even when the option is available, but to complete this quest I will have to play out this event triggered battle. That red unit is just the starting location, I won't be able to see its exact location unless its in the line of site of one of my units. The arcs in front of my units show their line of site. I start by spreading out my units, sending the left one a bit further left and the right one a bit further right so we can try and find the enemy. He probably won't march straight forward but will try to come at us from the side. Its not too long before we find the enemy. My left and middle unit can engage immediately, but my right unit needs to be repositioned in order to get in on the action. I also decide that its time to use a tactic. Different officers have different tactics that can be used in combat. If you equipped your troops with horses or guns when they were deployed it would also open up additional tactics. Tactics are pretty important because aside from the number of soldiers, tactics seem to be pretty much only thing that differentiates different units in battle. Nobunaga employs a tactic to greatly increase the damage of ranged attacks, and since everyone is using ranged attacks right now, this works out pretty well. Yoshimoto also employs a tactic to increase ranged attack. Now all three units are in position. I think we've got the upper hand here. Enemy reinforcements are starting to show up in the battle. But it makes no difference. We wipe out Yoshimoto's unit before his reinforcements can really get involved, and they all retreat. With the death of Yoshimoto, the Imagawa clan starts falling apart. One of his retainers, Motoyasu Matsudaira decides to break away and reclaim the land of his ancestors. We'll take a closer look at that a bit later when I have a shot of the map, but for now we have other plot events unfolding. Dosan Saito, who is Nobunaga's uncle, is killed by his own heir. At the last minute, before his son's army kills him, Dosan writes up a new will giving his land to Nobunaga. Nobunaga will use this as a pretext to invade Mino. With all those story scenes out of the way lets look at the map. To the south of us in the green is the newly formed Matsudaira clan which just broke away from the Imagawa clan. to our north and east with a symbol that is a blue wave is Saito, which is now hostile after the recent story events. Just to west of the Saito clan is the Azai clan which is friendly. Also if we look to the east, the clan with the diamonds are Takeda and the one with the triangles are Hojo. Thought it might be worth mentioning cause they are part of the previously mentioned alliance with Imagawa. Our current objective is to increase relations with the Azai and Matsudaira. We must also take Inabayama castle from the Saito. There's no need to go after Saito immediately. We are still at war with Imagawa and we have an army in the area, so why not capture Narumi castle. Of course some Imagawa armies finally show up, so we will have to fight them. We defeat the Imagawa forces, but Imagawa also has an ally in the west who starts sending in armies as well. So we'll have to fight them off as well. We win the fight, but Oda forces have taken a beating. Sensing our weakness, Saito decides to send a massive force to take Inuyama castle. There's nothing we can do to stop it. After those last battles we don't have enough troops to fight off this massive attack. We capture Narumi. We might as well, since we already lost a ton of lives trying to take it. However Inuyama castle will soon fall to the Saito. Fortunately, after Inuyama falls, the Saito armies pack up and head home. Probably because an army that large would consume a lot of supplies if it remained in the field for an extended period of time. Early in in the game, the AI tends to do a massive attack to take a single castle then go home and wait a bit before launching the next attack. Its a good thing too. If the Saito were able to run an extended campaign, they could have just wiped us out. We really do not have enough troops right now to take them on. I send all my armies home except one which cannot return home because we lost the castle. I should have enough supplies to keep that army alive until the next harvest. In any case, its going to be awhile awhile before we are ready to take on the Saito. My soldiers need to replenish. But we are way ahead of schedule in achieving the quest objectives so there really is no rush. Right now I am working towards building up trust Azai because its an objective and they could be useful against the Saito. It costs more than half my monthly income, otherwise I'd be improving relations with two clans at once. Right now that just isn't possible. The rest of the money is going toward castle improvements to increase how much money I make. |

Chapter 3: Retaking Inuyama Castle After a few months of building up our strength, the Oda armies are sent to take Kutsukake from the Imagawa. There is a small army defending the castle but nothing we can't handle. The Imagawa are in such a state of disarray after the death of Yoshimoto, they can't really send any reinforcements to help. None of Imagawa's allies seem interested in helping either. Instead of sending everything, we leave a sizable force at Kiyosu to discourage another attack by Saito. Not long after Kutsukake falls to our forces, we complete the objective to raise relations with the Azai clan, which triggers another scene. Nobunaga arranges for his sister Oichi to marry into the Azai clan in order to secure an alliance. Many in the Azai clan are distrusting of the Oda clan but Nagasama Azai insists he is behind Nobunaga 100%. We shall see about that. Not too long after this another event is triggered. Masahide Hirate, the guy we saw back at the beginning of the game, tries to give some advice to Nobunaga, but gets brushed off. However he has an idea of how to get the attention of his lord. Yes, Masahide commits ritual suicide. He also leaves a letter for Nobunaga. It criticizes his reckless behavior and also says he doesn't show any concern for those around them. He says that many of the retainers want to be a part of Nobunaga's dream for a unified Japan, but he has to work with them rather than ignore them. And Nobunaga took the message to heart and became a better person. Isn't that nice. Now back to the gameplay. A neat thing in this game is that you can expend the trust you built up with other clans and ask them to attack a specific target. It costs 40 trust to call in an attack, and you can only call in one at a time per clan, even if you have 80 or more trust built up. Since our army has pretty much recovered its strength, its time to retake Inuyama castle from the Saito. First I call in a favor from the Azai and have them target Ogaki castle. Saito moves armies to deal with Azai. I launch my own attack and Saito has split up its forces to try and defend both castles, but it looks he's going to be outnumbered at both locations. In the end, we are able to take Inuyama castle. Azai is successful in taking Ogaki. If an ally attacks a castle at your request they will hand it over to you if they are able to take it. This makes sense. I spent thousands of gold raising trust with them. If I expend that trust to call in a favor, I better actually get the castle out of it. Even though the Saito army has been pretty much wiped out, with only small reserve forces at the remaining castles, we will not continue with an offensive at this time. Our supplies have been pretty much used up, so we will have to wait for the harvest to continue the war. |

Chapter 4: Crushing the Saito The harvest comes in in 1553, but I decide to wait another year before launching an attack on the Saito. In the meantime, our diplomatic mission with the Matsudaira clan has finally finished, which triggers another scene. So the leader of the Matsudaira clan is a childhood friend of Nobunaga and they decide to form an alliance. Also the guy changes his name from Motoyasu to Ieyasu. This is not the first time and certainly not the last time a character will change their name. In some cases a guy will change his name literally in the first scene his introduced, so I just ignore it and only screenshot after the name has changed. But in some cases it can't be ignored, like this time. Pretty soon Ieyasu is calling for our help to take a castle from the Imagawa. Since Nobunaga is a nice guy, we will be helping out our ally. We send a few armies to help while most of our forces remain home. We don't want to use up all our supplies on this. Our forces combined with the Matsudaira armies should be enough to beat everything the Imagawa have in the area. If you answer an ally's call to capture a castle it should go to them when its captured even if you are the one who did it. But, while the siege was in progress I got a message that I failed to assist them. Maybe it was because it took too long to capture. But in any case, all the Matsudaira soldiers went home while I finished off the siege and ended up taking the castle for myself. Well it wasn't a top priority for me or anything, but I guess one more castle is always good. In a few months the harvest will come and we can launch a major attack against the Saito. We send a very large force to capture the Saito castles in the east, while still leaving a few thousand soldier at home to discourage a counter attack from the north. The tiny Saito armies were crushed and we were able to capture Iwamura and Naeki. But we will have to wait for more supplies to be built up before we can deal the final blow to the Saito. For now, our armies head home. Again, Matsudaira is asking for our help in taking an Imagawa castle. We send just one army, and it might not even have been necessary. It looks like Matsudaira sent enough of his own troops to beat the Imagawa. This time Matsudaira actually takes the castle and I get credit for helping. After the harvest we make a big push against the Saito sending forces to Gujo and Inabayama at the same time. We even call on teh Azai again to make the attack even more powerful. All the Saito forces are quickly wiped out and Gujo soon falls, but the defenses at Inabayama are quit formidable so it will take awhile to capture. This seems like a good time to talk a bit about sieges. I hovered my mouse over the castle so some stats are visible in the screenshot. The really important one is HP. If you surround a castle with more soldiers than it has HP you will make progress towards capturing the castle but if the castle has more HP than the number of soldiers you won't be able to take it. However, you can order the army to storm the castle. This will damage its HP but the army itself will also take casualties. Once the HP is lower than the soldiers the siege will progress. If the HP ever reaches 0 you just automatically take the castle, so there may be cases where you choose to storm even if a blockade would work if you are in a hurry. I tend to prefer to take castles without storming if possible because that damage will have to repaired when I take the castle over, but for Inabayama castle I decide to storm. Eventually we take the castle. The Saito are defeated and Mino province is ours. Also some retainer convinces Nobunaga to rename the castle Gifu. Although I don't think the cultural significance of that name was really explained too well in the scene. However, with that goal accomplished there are now events going on elsewhere. For quite some time, the emperor had just been a figurehead and the real power lay with the Shogun. However, the shogun had also been weakened by the Onin war about a century ago. Many daimyo's challenged the authority of the shogun. The war ended in a stalemate when both sides were exhausted, but the Shogun was no longer in any position to enforce its authority across the country. The lack of central authority lead to the current situation in Japan where various lords are fighting for power. So the current shogun was planning to rebuild his power, but the Miyoshi clan were planning to turn the shogun into a puppet. Miyoshi invade the capital to take out the current shogun, because I guess they thought his successor would be easier to control. The shogun turns out to be a real badass and singlehandedly kills a ton of soldiers, but eventually is killed. I'm sure this account is historically accurate and not mythologized in any way. Afterwards, the Shogun's brother calls on the Oda clan for assistance to retake the capital. He is hoping to reestablish a strong shogunate with Nobunaga's help, however Nobunaga is planning to use the Shogun as a puppet. Our goal is to capture Kannonji castle and the deadline is five years. However that is not the capital, so another objective should appear after we complete that one before the quest is over. In this map, you can see Kannonji to our west. Even further to the west is Nijo castle which is the actual capital. So before messing with the Miyoshi clan we are gonna conquer some other random clan that happens to be in the way. |

Chapter 5: Pushing Back the Triple Alliance The Takeda clan is facing internal unrest, so the leader joins a buddhist priesthood in a cynical plan to get their support. He also changes his name because name changes are all the rage in feudal Japan. Surprisingly this is the only story scene in this update and the rest is pure gameplay. So let's get to it. We call in another favor from the Azai and have them attack Kannonji. They will get wiped out but they will do serious damage to the enemy so my own forces can clean them up and take the castles. I split up and send some of the units to capture Otowa while the larger portion of the army wipes out the remaining forces at Kannonji. We complete our quest objective and add two new castles to our domain. Not too shabby. This time our objective actually is to take the capital. However, we still have a few years before the deadline so I decide to finish off this clan before starting trouble with Miyoshi. After the next harvest our troops start moving out. The enemy is down to one castle so he can’t muster a very large army. We will crush them and take the castle. While this is going on, our ally the Matsudaira clan is calling for assistance because they are being attacked by the Hojo. Since we sent a fairly small army on the current task, we still have plenty of supplies to deploy soldiers in defense of our allies. So I decide to accept their request for aid. Pretty soon we capture Iga Ueno and wipe out a clan. Now lets see how our ally is doing. Matsudaira has not been doing well. The castle we helped them take from the Imagawa has been lost to Hojo, and they’ve lost another castle to Takeda. Imagawa may be doing pretty bad at the moment, but the other members of the triple alliance seem to be capable of kicking Matsudaira’s ass. However, this time I’m able to protect my ally. I deploy a ton of soldiers in the area, and Hojo just turns around and goes home without even thinking of fighting. A few months I get a warning from an advisor that Takeda forces are marching on Nagashino castle. I quickly muster an army and send them to defend the castle. A Sizable enemy force has gathered at Yoshida. I leave one unit at an intersection just north of Yoshida to keep them busy while the rest of the army marches for Nagashino. Hojo are helping Takeda with this attack and have an army almost at the castle, while two Takeda armies are coming from the north. Takeda wipes out my force at the intersection and marches toward the castle of my ally. He has two small stacks but one larger stack of 4000 is enough to take out the Matsudaira armies. I can’t really send anything to help him at the moment. We take quite a few casualties but our forces are victorious at Nagashino. Hojo and Takeda forces are in retreat. However, our supplies are quite low and we must send our army home. The Matsudaira armies have been wiped out but they did do some damage to the Takeda army. The castle is formidable and the Takeda army will need to storm the castle if they want to take it. This will buy Matsudaira some valuable time because a harvest is coming up very soon. After the harvest I can deploy a large number of soldiers and drive out the Takeda army. But I’m not content to just push them back. I am taking a castle in retribution for this attack. Imagawa sends some soldiers to help their ally and tries to defend Yoshida, but it's not going to be nearly enough to stop the massive army we sent. Pretty soon Yoshida belongs to the Oda. The lesson everyone needs to learn is that if you mess with Nobunaga you’re gonna have a bad time. However that did kill some of our valuable time and we have a deadline to take the capital in just a couple years, so we’re gonna need to get back on track to accomplish that. |

Chapter 6: Marching to the Capital After the next harvest its time to march for the capital. We call on the Azai to help us out again, and also send a very large number of soldiers. We have a few thousand staying home at our eastern castles to defend against the triple alliance if necessary, but almost all of our troops have been deployed for this operation. While most of ours soldiers are heading for Nijo, I also send a unit to grab Asamiya. I figure he wouldn’t have much available to defend it with all the commotion at Nijo, so it would be nearly defenseless. I didn’t grab any good screenshots as the fight was playing out but what happened was this. My attack on Asamiya was wiped out. At Nijo we managed to come out on top. Azai took a few casualties and ran home. Our own forces took heavy casualties, but we wiped out most of the Miyoshi forces in the area and are now able to lay siege to Nijo. So Nobunaga installs Yoshiaki as the new Shogun. The asshole who killed the last Shogun wants to talk to Nobunaga. I’m sure this will be good. That conversation was a hell of a lot longer and I trimmed it down a lot with just those three screenshots, but here’s the gist of what happened. Hisahide lost the power struggle within the Miyoshi clan so he can’t stay with them anymore, but killing the shogun has also made a lot of enemies for him, so he doesn’t really have anyone to turn to. He asks to serve Nobunaga. At first it seems like Nobunaga is gonna reject the offer so he can build a good relationship with the new Shogun he installed. But then he reveals that he admires Hisahide because he’s a ruthless bastard. So he welcomes Hisahide’s service. To the surprise of no one, Yoshiaki finds out about this pretty soon. He decides that Nobunaga can’t be trusted if he has the guy who murdered his brother working for him. Pretty soon Yoshiaki is convincing Daimyos to turn against Nobunaga. One of the clans that sides with Yoshiaki is the Asakura clan, who are allies with our ally Azai. So Nagamasa is trying to decide if the Azai should side with Asakura or the Oda, and he talks to his wife about this, who is Nobunaga’s sister as you might recall. She doesn’t advise him to side with Oda. Instead she tells him to stay true to his values. Since Azai has been allied to Asakura for a lot longer than Oda he sides with them. What a great sister Nobunaga has, so useful. Nagamasa also offers to send her home to the Oda, but she insists on being a good wife and staying with him. Immediately after the scenes end I get an offer of an alliance from the Bessho clan. I accept, because I’m pretty sure I’ll be needing allies. Our objectives are to capture Nagashima castle, eliminate our former allies Azai, and to eliminate Asakura. We only have 5 years to do this to complete the quest, and for the first time I think I may have trouble meeting the deadline, but it's still possible so I’ll go for it. Here’s a map so you can see the current situation. The red lines indicate the enemy coalition. I know from the previous games that pretty much anyone who hates you might jump into a coalition, so I expect at least a couple other clans to join the enemy coalition eventually. There is a pro Oda coalition, which right now is just me and my weak ally Matsudaira. I maybe able to invite Bessho but other than that I don’t really think there’s anyone else I can convince to join, and I doubt Bessho is gonna be strong enough to really help out. |

Chapter 7: Wiping Out Traitors Pretty much as soon as the anti-Oda coalition is formed I get a warning that enemy troops are marching toward Iga Ueno. I had just taken the capital so I have an army in the area which I immediately send to defend my castle. I also raise up an army back at home and send it to attack Nagashima. I’m trying to achieve the quest objectives ASAP. Pretty soon I get a little side quest. While the main quest will have us wipe out the Azai, this side quest wants me to capture the castles in a specific order. Basically we capture everything except their capital and then get the capital last. Nobunaga will gain a trait which makes him even more powerful if we complete this side quest so I think it's a good idea to do it. I decide that I don’t need so many troops to defend Iga Ueno and I send some to take Kamaha from the traitorous Azai. It doesn’t look like Azai is going to have enough troops to hold back our offensive. By May of 1560, the fighting at Iga Ueno is over. We have taken heavy casualties but we weathered the storm. The castle is still ours. Azai is still putting up a fight near Kamaha but we should have the numbers to beat them. Our attack on Nagashima is in trouble. Though we were doing okay at first, reinforcements from the southwest came to assist Nagashima. I deploy another unit to try and turn it back in our favor. The Nagano Kudo clan is begging to be our vassal. I accept. They will automatically join our coalition, but they are so weak I doubt they will help much. We capture Kamaha from the Azai. We also beat the enemy forces at Nagashima, although only a small army remains to continue the siege. Another enemy army shows up to assist Nagashima. They are more than a match for the tiny army we have in the area. Although if they hadn’t shown up, our army would have died anyway from storming the castle. It just wasn’t a large enough force to take the castle. We successfully persuade Bessho to join our coalition. I don’t know that they’ll be too helpful, but you never know. I had already done significant damage to Nagashima and I wanted to capture it before the enemy had a chance to repair. So I deployed as many troops as I possibly could with the available supplies. There will be a harvest next month so I can field more troops in the near future if need be, but it looks like I will have enough. Even with additional reinforcements coming from the south, I have the upper hand thanks to the help of a loyal tribe in the area. I convince the Akamatsu clan to join our coalition. They are just to the west of Bessho and have a very similar symbol. Not sure they will be too helpful though. So Nagashima is a base for religious fanatics. A sect of buddhists that want to violently overthrow the existing feudal lords, which is ironic because the founder was a pacifist. Many Daimyo in this period fought to suppress this sect. However Oda was particularly ruthless. After laying siege to castle, the members of the sect tried to surrender but he had them all executed. With that accomplished it’s time to make a big push on Azai. We send a ton of soldier to take Shimizuyama. Azai doesn’t have nearly enough to defend against this. After taking that castle we march to Odani to finish them off. We get a message from Matsudaira to help them defend Inui. It appears Matsudaira actually managed to take a castle from Imagawa all on their own without our help. I didn’t think they could pull it off. However, those gains are now threatened by Hojo who is intent on taking that castle. I deploy some units to deal with it. Meanwhile the siege of Odani is complete. So Nagamasa realizes too late that he should have sided with Nobunaga instead of against him. Nobunaga’s sister criticizes him for caving to the demands of his retainers who were against Nobunaga. She did not say this before they were at war but apparently waited until now. Nagamasa tells her to take their children and leave the castle expecting that Nobunaga will keep them safe, which he does. Nagamasa takes his own life and the castle falls. Meanwhile our forces are just mopping up the remaining Hojo forces at Inui. We did lose most of the soldiers we sent, but the castle was saved. You may notice there seems to be a ton of enemy forces in the area, although not actually attacking. It appears that whenever an army passes anywhere close to an ai castle, the ai will preemptively deploy a ton of soldiers for defensive purposes. Since I have forces in the area, the triple alliance has deployed just a ton of defensive soldiers. Once the attacking Hojo army is finished off and I send my army home, those armies will go home too. |

Its pretty cool, you might like it, but I'm not sure if I can recommend it. Its really pricey. I got it during a steam sale, but full price its kind of a rip off. Chapter 8: Teaching Hojo a Lesson After the next harvest we make our move against the Asakura clan. We’ve got a pretty sizable force so I don’t think they can really stand up to us. We get a call from Matsudaira that Hojo are once again attacking. We deploy a large number of soldiers in order to deal with this. Although it looks like the Hojo have a pretty sizable force. This could be tricky. Our attack on Asakura is going well. We won some early skirmishes and are now laying siege to two castles. The one enemy army in the area isn’t nearly strong enough to beat us. And after a short Skirmish it looks like Hojo is packing up to go home. I guess we should send our own armies home now so we don’t waste too many supplies. Meanwhile, we had taken two castles from the Asakura. Since I still have some supplies I decided to continue the invasion. The enemy deployed their remaining forces to try and make a stand near Ichijodani castle, but it won’t be nearly enough. So Shingen Takeda decides that the Imagawa are worthless after the death of Yoshimoto, a pretty reasonable assessment. He decides to break away from the triple alliance. He executes all the retainers who still support the Imagawa including his own son. Is anyone keeping track of the number of family members killed for political reasons in this game, cause I lost count. After that scene is over we get an alliance offer from Takeda which I accept. Strangely enough they make this offer while in the coalition against the Oda, and they will remain in the coalition after we are allied. I like this game a lot, but perhaps the diplomatic aspect could still use some work. It looks like we sent our forces home too soon, because the Hojo are attacking Inui again. Maybe they never went home but actually turned around as soon as I sent my troops home. In any case I wasn’t paying close enough attention to make sure the area was secure. I deploy troops to deal with it, but they probably won’t get there in time to save the castle Inui falls to the Hojo, although Matsudaira thanks me for sending forces anyway. I decide that the Hojo need to be taught a lesson. Instead of packing up and going home, I divert most of soldiers south to attack the other Hojo controlled castle in the region. With the Hojo now distracted defending another castle, I have one army continue on to Inui to take it. The defenses of the castle were badly damaged by the Hojo and they haven’t had a chance to rebuild them after taking the castle. It should be a piece of cake to take it for myself. Meanwhile, we’ve taken out the Asakura clan. Another member of the coalition has a ton fo forces deployed in the area, but didn’t feel like helping. Our new objective is to surround the capital. Should have just kept it last time instead of reinstalling the Ashikaga shogunate. It seems that one of the members of the enemy coalition has decided to attack Iga Ueno. I have a lot of soldiers at the castles in the area, but can’t deploy them because I have almost no supplies left. Perhaps I was a bit too aggressive in attacking Asakura. Maybe I could have waited to finish them off and left some supplies in reserve. I the start of the next month I spend almost all the income on supplies so I can deploy a small army. It won’t be enough to stop the attack, but my hope is to keep them busy and hold the castle for just a few months. After the harvest I can send a much larger army. The Hojo had a pretty large force in the area and I really don’t have the supplies to deploy any more troops, so I called upon Matsudaira for help. Together we completely wiped out the Hojo forces in the area, and took both nearby castles. It was a pretty uncertain for a bit, but in the end we did successfully drive the Hojo out of the region. |

Chapter 9: End of The Ashikaga Shogunate In the last chapter I bought some supplies to raise up small army and sent it to Iga Ueno. It was wiped out, but it served its purpose. The enemy amy was stalled and unable to capture the castle before the next harvest. Once I had abundant supplies available sent a larger army to Iga Ueno. I also deployed a massive force to take Asamiya from the Miyoshi. Miyoshi deployed a ton of troops to defend Asamiya. The roads were getting so backed up not all my soldiers could even participate in the battle. They were just sitting around consuming supplies without actually accomplishing anything. So I diverted some troops to attack the capital and try to achieve the quest objective. I noticed a massive buildup at Makishima and I was worried that they might try to assist the Ashikaga defenders at the capital. I sent an army not large enough to beat them but at least keep the forces at Makashima tied up. We had almost wiped out the defenders at Nijo and could soon take the castle if no one else showed up in time. Meanwhile, our attack on Asamiya was being pushed back and it looked like we wouldn’t have enough troops to take that castle. Yoshiaki, being the genius that he is, deduces that Nobunaga was just planning to use him for his own ambitions from the moment he offered assistance. In any case, the Oda clan takes the capital and the Ashikaga shogunate is brought to an end permanently. A bit later, our friend in the Matsudaira clan changes his family name to Tokugawa. The symbol on the map is still the same but our ally is now the Tokugawa clan. Shingen Takeda gets sick and on his deathbed tells his retainers to keep the fact hidden for a few years. Shingen was legendary in battle, like most of the clan leaders in this game apparently, and he is worried that the Takeda won’t be able to win a war without his leadership. We get a call from the Matsudaira Tokugawa clan asking for help taking Kakegawa castle from the Imagawa. Lots of gawas involved in this operation. I decide to help them out and deploy a bunch of troops to assist. The Imagawa have proven to be pretty pathetic so this shouldn’t be difficult. You may have noticed that after I completed the objective to capture the capital I never showed a new quest objective. That’s because I don’t have one. I don’t know if it's because the questline is complete or maybe I captured some castle before I was supposed to and it screwed up the quest line. But in any case, I will be making my own goals now. For starters I’m going after all the members of the now defunct coalition. I send some forces north to take a couple castles from this asshole before I make my big push against the Miyoshi. Imagawa forces are defeated and Kakegawa is in the hands of our ally. And we crush the enemy armies in the north and take both castles. Things are looking pretty good for us now. |
