Ignoring the fact that keeping Austria-Hungary would have been nearly impossible to keep together after the war, due to the situation on the ground... would it have been better for the allies if Austria-Hungary had not been broken up? Hitler would have been unable to annex Austria nor bully the Czechoslovakia. Hungary also would not have helped the Nazis either (which they did to regain their territory. It would have been a major power that would have prevented Hitler from taking advantage of how divided the region was. However, it is certainly possible that Austria-Hungary might have sided with the Nazis anyway... in which case it would have been worse for them to remain. It's difficult to imagine Austria-Hungary surviving though. The Romanians had smashed the Hungarians in their attempt to gain Transylvania which both countries had people living in. The Hungarians themselves actually fell to a brutal communist dictator for 100 days. Additionally many of the people who had been marginalized in the Austria-Hungarian Empire were rebelling successfully. They would have had to stay out of the war and like Franz Ferdinand wanted transform into a federation. But this would have really pissed off the Hungarians who controlled a lot of contested territory in the Empire. This would have been a cool flag though... |

Given that Franz Ferdinand probably would have liberalized the empire had he lived, & given the fact that the Italian monarchy fell to fascism, I'm not confident that Austria couldn't fall, too. Nationalism would be rife in such a situation - as it already was at the time. It would be a gunpowder barrel ready to explode, just as the Weimar Republic was to the north. |
