Possible map?

Aven Dale I believe is also working on a map, so when he has his, if he wishes to continue with it, we can let the region/those interested in doing MT/PMT rping vote on which to use.

This map was made by Milograd/Carta, an experienced and very good rper, as well as being a member of the South Pacific, serving as vice delegate earlier this year.

I'd act as editor of the map, although others can help out too (both Aven Dale and Eluvatar are accomplished map makers/editors it seems, and BA is, I'm told, also a talanted graphic artist), and map claims would, for the moment be made in one of 4 colours as shown here. The HTML notations for each are:
The Redish-Brown: 852e25
The Blue: 3b2c87
The Orange: e0800c
The Green: 285438
The HTML notations for the Borders (which should be drawn using a 1 pixel wide pencil preferably and look vaguely realistic) and font (Sans) are:
The Borders: b2c48e
The Font: ffffff

When staking a claim you could either edit the map yourself, save as a .png document and then upload via Imageshack or any other image site such as Photobucket or DropBox. However, the cartography team would reserve the right to reject/reduce outrageous claims.

I hope that, whatever map we end of using, we'll be able to encourage Modern Tech and Post Modern Tech and even Past Tech rping using this map, although Eluvatar's Balder map serves as a very good past tech map for pre-20th century rping, Past Tech rping on this map would largely be limited to cold war era rps.

Open for thoughts and questions always.

The map currently has one (small) polar region. Being a Norse/northern inspired region, we could maybe see about adding some more of extending the one there northwards and in width also.

The map scale also needs discussing and I have no strong feelings about it (personally i favour something around 1 pixel to 30-40 km, so as the map isn't too small should we ever be influencial enough to get on the NS RP World Map).

The map also doesn't include much in the way of geographical content such as rivers and mountains, which I like as it allows nations to develop their own terrain as well as work with neighbour nations on joint features, such as forests, mountain ranges and deserts.

Edit: another thing to consider would be Balder's position with regards to the Nationstates MT RP World Map. Personally I'd favour being located north of Judea as the space seems ideal (either that or we're somewhere north of Mingyang) for being a norse/nordic region.

Then again, I'll be rping my land in Balder as a colony of my main roleplay nation, which resides in judea, so I am biased when it comes to this. Obviously we couldn't go on the NS 'World Map' immediately, but it wouldn't hurt to consider where we are in relation to the major rping regions on NS.

That map is for Past tech and fantasy tech role play. :)

This would be for modern tech role play.

That's one shiny map.

I would put my colony on an island in the middle of the polar regions.

Or any island, really.

The land to ocean ratio i think is too small. The map itself if very good.

Well how are we dividing up the plots, and are we going to have any policies for any "territorial expansion" ?

You make map claim. I, and whoever else is on the cartography team, decide if it's too unreasonable and resize it as appropriate.

Expansions have to RPed, and can't be more than your current claim. Colonies are allowed but, again, must be rped and can't be too large.

Changed me mind.

The three inland islands will become Vortiaganica Baldris, also known as the Sylvenur Islands.

All three will form our colony, and we shall rule the airspace of that inland sea with an iron fist.

De facto, of course.

I'll start with the first two from the North, and reserve the south one for a roleplay take-over.

I think that's about the size of yo' colony, so I'll pop the claim in soon.

Hmm... I have a few thoughts on this, but when you get the chance to see this, any chance we could speak on IRC St. George after 0700 PST (GMT - 7)? I'm currently at work now but I have some suggestions and questions if I may?

Any thoughts you have can be put here or in a telegram to my Balder nation, Wanjestay. I'm staying off IRC today and this weekend to do University work, I'm afraid.

Some images of this map, incidentally produced while I plot my own offering:

North Pole View

Equator X Prime Meridian View

Equator X Dateline View

These are Lambert Azimuthal equal-area projection maps. The below pic basically explains the projection:

Posted Image

The points on the map are as far from the center as they are in a straight line in 3 dimensions. This results in a map where every pixel is the same size in area. In this case, assuming a roughly earth-sized planet, each pixel is roughly 200 square kilometers in these maps. In the middle, they are thus actually representative of (roughly) 14 by 14 kilometer squares.

For comparison here is a map of the earth in the same projection of the same size.
