A fascinating article by Christian Caryl in Foreign Policy. It argues that dictators who give up power and retreat are making a difficult but necessary choice in the progress towards greater freedoms and show extraordinary leadership. Obviously, it's still early with Burma (Myanmar) but I do think he does have a point in that we don't appreciate these leaders as much as we should (especially when we want to encourage them to relinquish power). |

I agree, there are many different types of courage, many of which are underestimated and undervalued. There is still the point, however, that some of these people - those who changed from evil to good - have still been bad, and have still done bad things. The question, to me, is how does it balance? Has the good this person has done in a position of power outweigh the bad things they have done to get there, and were their intentions good all along, or are they just doing what they think is necessary to stay in power? We cannot underestimate greed, or the power of the status quo. I know people are genuinely capable of a change of heart, and if that is the case with people like the current leaders of Burma/Myanmar then good on them, they deserve praise for standing up to their colleagues and demanding change, but it doesn't mean that they're doing it for the good of the people.
