Fuzzys Monkey in IKEA topic reminded of an article I had read in The Economist a while ago. It was about corruption in Russia and how some companies played by the “rules” of corruption and others like IKEA fought back. There is the example that when the Russian officials cut the power to IKEA stores for not paying them, IKEA in turn bought backup generators hereby thwarting the Russians. However, obviously not all companies do this so the question becomes… should companies who participate in corruption be prosecuted if it breaks the rules in which the company is based? Or should companies strive to hold higher standards?

When in Rome do as the Romans do?

The thought for the day on BBC Radio 4's Today programme earlier related to this by saying that the solution to the financial crisis could be perhaps be found in looking to the Archbishop of Canterbury (Head of the Church of England) and the Archbishop of Westminster (Head of the Roman Catholic Church in England) instead of George Osborne's changes in his autumn statement or the new head of the Bank of England. The person's argument was that business has drifted too far from ideas of morality purely to ideas of profit and even looking back to Adam Smith's ideas one sees that he saw morality as central to it.

Depends on definition of corruption. People would possibly describe the company i work for as corrupt simply based on what the competition does. Because we seeminly price higher but trade lower. In a consumers eyes, this is Wrong. In the company's, it is good business sense, as margins on new stuff is smaller. I work for the biggest specialist of its kind in the UK, which has the largest market for the product outside of America. We very rarely charge full rrp on new stuff. Yet we are seen as the Evil Ones. So it depends on definition. Ideally, actual corruption should be fought at every level
