So I've been reading about Anne Boleyne and watched a documentary on her, fascinating stuff. It's cool all the mystery around her and her death. Was it Thomas Cromwell or Henry VIII who was responsible for her death? Was their any truth to the crimes laid against her, the ones of adultery and treason? I find the idea of an intelligent fierce young common woman who became Queen amazing, especially because of the culture back then. |

The Tudor period is rather fascinating. One of the best history books I read last year was 'Winter King', it's about King Henry VII (Henry VIII's father). He was the one who finally won the Wars of the Roses, killing Richard III at Bosworth Field. The result of this violent rise to power was a neurotic and authoritarian king, constantly worried about being overthrown, and a reign notable for the ruthless crackdowns on anything that even suggested a revolt. Henry knew how easy it was to overthrow a king having done it himself, and became a very suspicious man as a result. Anyway, back to Anne. I think, given Henry VIII's record, that the charges were likely made up to get rid of her. There may be some truth to them (Henry doesn't sound like a nice husband, she may have come to dislike or fear him), but most, if not all of the charges will have been made up to get rid of her. |

I agree, fascinatingly, Game of Thrones is said to have been inspired by the War of the Roses. I don't know enough about (or anything really) about that war to know though. |

I can believe that. There was a lot of scheming, backstabbing, and to-and-fro power shifting in the Wars of the Roses. One of the things I love about British history is just how much of it there is. Especially the last 1000 years. There's so much going on, you're always learning something new, and there's always more depth or another angle on it you haven't seen yet. I know that applies to a lot of other countries too, but I go a little cross eyed thinking of all the stuff I'd have to read to get even the most basic grasp of world or European history, so I'll stick to knowing a bit about my own country's history for now. I keep meaning to read Game of Thrones, I would have by now but my dad has all but the first book (which he did something silly with), and given it's £10 for a store bought copy and I have dozens of unread books, I figured I'd leave it for a bit.

Off with the whore's head!* Slept with her brother apparently. Possibly in an effort to bear a child given Henry's periodic impotence? Or it's all a load of rubbish made up by Cromwell because he wanted to take things a different way? Or Henry to marry someone else? No one knows. No one will ever know in all likelihood. But we can damn well make some more documentaries and TV series about it. As for Anne Boleyn being a Commoner, well possibly if we take it in it's strictest sense meaning one not of the royalty. But that doesn't mean she was a nobody done good or any other such nonsense. Her mother was the daughter of the Duke of Norfolk. And her father's parents were Sir William Boleyn and Lady Margaret Butler, daughter of the Earl of Ormond. Incidentally, the same Duke of Norfolk was also grandfather to Henry's later wife Katherine Howard. None of Henry's wives were commoners by the modern meaning of the word, these were all members of an English elite. Catherine Parr would have been the lowest probably. Fascinatingly; Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour & Katherine Howard were all great granddaughters of this lady: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Cheney,_Lady_Say So yeah, the royal court was a strange place. Centuries of interbreeding from a rather limited circle of people. And certainly in Henry's reign significant numbers of people involved in the royal courts were executed for transgressions, affairs, and various other things. If you were anything to do with any of Henry's wives after Catherine of Aragon, you would be lucky to make it past about 1550. Even Henry's last wife who "survived" died in childbirth a year or two later bearing the child of Thomas Seymour, brother of Jane Seymour (who died in childbirth). Incidentally, he was executed in Edward VII's reign for something, and his daughter with Catherine Parr which survived taken into state care and then mysteriously disappears. It's all rather bizarre, absurd and foreign to us now, hence why it makes for good drama. *rabble-rousing |

Anne Boylen is such a fascinating historical figure. I imagine she was quite a captivating woman in her day. The allegations of her infidelity may or may not be true, I mean, who knows. However, I really do think that Henry had her killed, most likely because Cromwell had planted the notion in his head at some point. I mean, Henry was so reliant on him, and really trusted in his council, Cromwell could have convinced him to do anything. The guy convinced Henry to break with Rome (virtually unheard of in those days). Plus, by all accounts, Henry had become enamored with Jane Seymour. Henry seems like the kind of guy who would do anything to get what he wanted. Even if it meant killing his current wife to be with another woman. Tudor era history was one of my focuses of study in college and I can be a total nerd about it. If you like reading that type of stuff I would recommend Alison Weir (she writes both historical non-fiction and historical fiction, both of which are brilliant). Henry also had lots of mistresses. He had a son with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Blount (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_FitzRoy,_1st_Duke_of_Richmond_and_Somerset) who may well have been named King upon his death had he not had another son, and had he survived Henry. It was rumoured even that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Boleyn#Royal_mistress was more attractive than Anne! |
