The City of Toronto, has come up with an interesting proposal that would allow long-term Canadian residents who live in the city to vote in it's municipal elections. Personally, I think it's a wonderful idea and really makes you think about what citizenship means in this day and age. I'm not sure if this has been done anywhere else. What do you guys think? Also, I doubt that this will help fix Torontos ridiculously dysfunctional City Council

I think it is a great idea. My uncle just became a citizen about 5 years ago, but had lived in NYC for over 30 years before that. Giving people who have stayed in the area for such a long time some representation is a great idea in my opinion.

No, sorry I'm pretty against that concept. You pretty much answered your own question with your last sentence there, lol. It can only make messed up politics worse. Long-term resident is not really a substitute for citizenship. It takes effort to get your citizenship but it's hardly an unfair process. All you really need is a grade 9 level knowledge of Canadian history and geography, and skills in English. If you don't have those, you certainly shouldn't be a citizen, let alone decide the fate of the country. A lot of people also do not get citizenship so that they can skirt a lot of citizen obligations. EDIT: City elections, perhaps. Provincial/federal elections, not a chance. I do think it should be more of a municipal thing than a provincial or federal phenomenon.

Being unfamiliar with Canadian law/politics (like everyone else south of the other border), I can't state much of an opinion. Were something to occur stateside, I'd be wary since it kind of un-defines citizenship (in my view).

All EU citizens are allowed to vote where I live, as long as they've lived there for 3 months. |

All EU citizens, so to say: all people with a passport of a country which is member in the European Union and who have lived in my city for more than three months. Edit: even though, that is a right of every EU citizen in every country of the EU:

I agree it should stay in the municipal level, not be extended to the higher levels of government.
