So, the A.M.A., the American Medical Association has voted in favour of defining obesity as a disease. This is pretty controversial; some say that defining it as a disease allows for less stigma that it is just laziness while others attack the B.M.I. as a test for obesity and think it will cause people to look for pills as the solution. What do you guys think? | ||||

Sorry if I offend any overweight people with this post. Obesity is not a fucking disease, just as much as homosexuality is not a mental disorder. Here are facts that support obesity as a medical condition that I agree with: - Obesity is genetic. Metabolism is a hereditary trait. - It is difficult to lose weight and maintain it. That's where my agreements end. Overweight people, especially in America, are constantly fighting for rights and acceptance. Some have gone so far as to talk about a civil rights movement - which is an insult to blacks and homosexuals for implying that obesity deserves the same level of acceptance as race and sexual preference. If you're fat, that's your own problem. It is your fault, and your fault only, that you are obese. Common excuses that are complete bull: - "It's in my genetics." Translation: my parents are fat, so it's okay for me to be fat. No it's not. They fed you until you were old enough to make your own eating decisions and since then you have accepted that your eating habits are satisfactory. You can overcome obesity in your genetics - one of the girls on my U17 soccer team has a family that is almost 100% highly obese, but she works so hard in the gym and as an athlete that she is one of the top track and field stars and soccer players in the whole province. - "I can't afford good food." Translation: I'm too lazy to make a home cooked meal, so I like to eat out way too much, and because I eat out too much, I can only afford cheap fast food. Stop being a lazy fuck, go to the grocery store, buy some vegetables, pasta and red meat and cook a proper meal. Oh and some orange juice. - "I'm too scared to go to the gym." This is seriously the only sympathy I have for obese people complaining about being obese, but even then, come on. Agreed - there is a stigma of being fat in public. Solution: either A) grow some balls and go to the gym or B) buy some used home workout equipment. It's not that expensive. You don't need all the fancy machines to lose weight. Or go for a run in a quiet neighbourhood, or go for a bike ride. - My personal favourite: "I'm too fat to walk." (so they use a motorized wheelchair) Use a stationary bike or a non-motorized wheelchair! Don't be so god damn lazy. I can't stand fat people that accept their fatness, get a motorized wheelchair and then take up the handicapped spots while the 80 year old grandpas with fucked up knees have to walk all the way from the back of the parking lot at a busy wal-mart. These people are the worst and it happens a LOT in Canada. Again sorry if I offended you (I am not skinny myself but am mainly just pissed at myself for that because I chose not to play hockey this winter for the first time in 15 years and it cost me big time). But this is the politically incorrect truth that the media can't discuss. |

I do not view obesity as a disease itself, but as a symptom of various medical conditions.
And here is where you are wrong. I am offended here simply because you apparently don't know what you're talking about (at least when it comes to American obesity). Affording healthy food is a very real problem for many Americans (myself and my family included). The American food industry has become so tainted and corrupted that the only kinds of food that are affordable for many poor Americans are foods that kill you, like fast food or over-processed trash. I have had fresh produce in my fridge a grand total of once since striking it out on my own two months ago simply because fruits and vegetables are incredibly expensive, as are quality meats, dairy products and grains. This is why obesity rates skyrocket in states such as Mississippi and Louisiana where significant portions of the populations live below the poverty line. This is not an example of laziness; I have been struggling to find work for some time now and my parents do as much as they can at home (neither of them can work because they are both disabled). Healthy food is simply not an option for many people like us (although we do better than most in our social class within the state of New York). When it comes down to it, I and others like me have to make some choices: am I going to eat healthy food or pay my rent? Am I going to buy over-processed bread because I can afford it even though it makes my girlfriend sick because we can't afford gluten-free or am I going to have money to pay tuition? Are all obese people victims due to this uniquely American predicament? Probably not, but the majority are. I pronounce you the lazy fuck here, Falc, for being willing to slap a label on an entire class of people without proper analysis. You're free to keep that judgment when eating healthily is an option everyone has access to. |

Not being able to find work, allergic to gluten, and being physically disabled, is an extremely different predicament. I did not associate unemployment, medical barriers and disability with being lazy, so please do not put words in my mouth and make me out to be the bad guy when I didn't say that. Your case would be unique. That being said, you have raised some good points. Such is the American predicament; the business efficiencies of McDonald's often surpass the business efficiencies of farmers. But if an obese person has any source of income and does not face barriers that limit their choice in nutrition, they are truly kidding themselves into believing they are trapped. Even if we assume I'm wrong and there is a greater problem at hand of people being trapped in this system, the point that they do not get sufficient exercise (or made an effort to lose the weight or counter the high calorie intake) has not been addressed. |

I just realized I'm not quite done telling you how much of an ass you are. Your proviso "Sorry if I offend any overweight people" is total bullshit as well. A) If you have to add a pre-diatribe statement like that, just don't say it. It's like starting a sentence with "I'm not racist, but". You're letting everyone know "I'm about to say something totally asinine, inconsiderate and rude, so watch out!" You also raise the red flag that you know you're an asshole for what you're about to say but don't have the balls or integrity to admit it. B) This preface also places overweight people in a separate class of humanity for no clear reason (aside from your obvious us vs. them mentality). Why would overweight people be the only ones offended by what you say? That's certainly not the case- I'm actually at a pretty healthy weight for my frame. Does the extra fat affect their neurological processes? Do they get extra weepy? Do they have a neurotic inability to engage in discussion? No, you're just trying to engage in ass-covering doubletalk and failing at it. Last of all, you seek to tell these people how to fix their problem without being in their circumstances. Unless you'd like to reveal yourself as a fellow member of the happy obesity family, don't tell other people how to live their lives or fix their problems without knowing their obstacles or experiencing what they have. I deal with assholes like you as an Aspergian; people telling me to "try not to be autistic" or "find the good in [my] disability". Bullshit. They (read: you) have not gone through my experiences and they (you) do not face the same obstacles I do. As such, I recommend that you fuck off and let other people live their lives. |

I would have written a long post - but Falc sums it up appropriately. So I will just say me too. I can't stand watching shows like the Biggest Loser where people just cry about their weight. What prevented you from doing something about it? |

Not going to get drawn into a pissing match that is going far off topic (obesity being a disease), but brief response... A) Difference between saying "I'm not racist" and "Sorry if I offend you"; I was perfectly aware I might offend people. Tough. I'm not being a homophobe or racist bigot, I'm stating my opinion and I was apologizing if it offended you or anyone else. Also, I'm aware I'm an asshole. I've spoken my mind freely for about 9 years in NationStates and if you can't read someone else's opinion without getting into a personal pissing match then I'm sorry. B) Okay, now you're just taking me completely out of context. If I offended you and you're not overweight, then I really don't care because that tells me only that you don't like what I say. If you disagree with me and can present an alternative version of the facts, then by all means do so and I will happily debate in a cordial manner. However if you feel you have to defend obesity just for the sake of taking up cause and start calling me names, then I will not waste my time. C) Don't compare aspergers to obesity and yet AGAIN take me out of context. First of all, my brother has aspergers so don't assume I am not sympathetic. But really, where were you able to draw the conclusion that because I feel this way about obesity, that I would tell similar advice to people with Aspergers? Obese people can lose weight (vast majority of the time). People with aspergers cannot simply go to a gym and lose symptoms of Aspergers - no, I do not suffer from the disorder, and I cannot pretend I can relate to it, but I know enough about it to know that you can't draw Aspergers into the same debate as obesity. One is a relatively-speaking permanent neurological disorder brought on without a known outside cause, and the other is a curable physical disorder brought on by improper eating habits and/or genetics. This is not apples-to-apples so please do not turn this into a comparison between obesity and actual disorders and then imply that I was the one who could have started such a debate. |
