Forest Whitaker as Mr. Gaines.

I quite liked this film. It was an interesting portrayal of the black rights movement and some of the attitudes towards it. Forrest Whitaker did an amazing job in his role and despite my reservations when I saw Oprah in it, she performed well and was low key in it. Some of the acting choices for the Presidents did bug me a little. Robin Williams as President Eisenhower?

To me, it just took me right out of the film. I'm not saying he did a bad job but he doesn't seem to have that gravity that you feel the President should have. And Nixon... Nixon!

John Cussack as Nixon is simply inadequate. Nixon was a power egotistical force. This Nixon just... isn't powerful, intimidating and doesn't capture Nixon at all. Nixon in real life was a mixed bag, at times brilliantly progressive and at other times represented the most backwards politics. You pity this Nixon. You don't pity Nixon whether you loved or hated him.

I felt that Kennedy had the best portrayal and to me striked all the right notes.

While the man who plays Snape looked the most like the figure they were representing with the exception of Johnson... he just didn't carry the same sort of "heroic" figure that Reagan did.

I dislike Lyndon Johnson, but the man who portrayed him did a pretty good job. Albeit a lot too young looking, but it's a good Johnson.

Overall, decent film. They definitely didn't do a great job portraying the Presidents. JFK was a bit more progressive in the film than in RL and Reagan the opposite. In hindsight, some events were a bit more contrived than others. Anyway, I like it from a perspective on the black civil rights movement.

3.5/5.
